Rockabye, Baby

Carly Simon talks about her newest album -- a collection of lullabies -- remodeling her kitchen and why we're still obsessed with "You're So Vain" after all these years.

The letters thread is now closed.

This is Carly's worst album ever

I have heard lot's of tracks from this album on Jonathon Schwartz' show on WNYC and it is god awful. I love Jonathon, and I understand that he loves Carly because he grew up with her, but the album makes my skin crawl. When you hear Carly Simon sing Old Susannah you will know what I mean. Just imagine a rich jewish publishing heiress singing "Jimmy Crack Corn" ....oh wait, you don't have to imagine it, Carly has done just that!

wha?

What does Jewish have to do with anything?

Channel Some Hendrix For Us, Carly Baby!

I could care less about Simon's new album. But I would like to see her strap on a Stratocaster on channel some Hendrix.

Pardon?

Jewish publishing heiress? That's a bit rude.

And it's "O, Susannah", I believe. Though I'm sure hearing one's departing sweetheart sing "Old Susannah" would cause a lady to rethink wasting any further tears!

Subject of "You're So Vain"

May have to be of a certain age to know this one, but the story I'd heard is that the subject of the song is Mick. The song started as a humorous dig to the conspicuously rock and roll knight, which he acknowledged with good grace, even chiming in on the chorus.

Did you know...

that Carly Simon did some original music for a Winnie the Pooh movie and a Piglet movie?

Her songs for these movies are creative and catchy, rendering the multiple-Pooh-and-Piglet-viewing experience quite fun. "Comforting to Know" is hauntingly beautiful.

I will definitely buy her lullabye album.

You're So Vain

Carly Simon is so vain, she thinks we care who that song is about.

Jewish Publishing Heiress Rethinks It All!

".....Though I'm sure hearing one's departing sweetheart sing "Old Susannah" would cause a lady to rethink wasting any further tears!..."

Hey there....you do know that Massah James Taylor recorded "O, Susannah" only three or so years before he pulled into Gare de La Carly?

And, by the way, what's "rude" about referring to Jewish Publishing Heiresses as "Jewish Publishing Heiresses"? Presumably, most of them already know this about themselves.

In any case, any woman who's let folks talk her into recording "Attitude Dancing" has, in my opinion, earned herself the right to sing any dang song she wants afterwards/forever.

Now....if only Carly Simon will join forces with, say, Jessye Norman and Bjork in offering us a nicely-updated version of "The Bonnie Blue Flag", then I'll finally be really happy.

yours as ever,

David Terry

Re: Is it any wonder she has been reduced to producing commercial jingles for the US Postal service!

What a boor!

"What does Jewish have to do with anything?..."

Dear reader,

Obviously, your mother is not Jewish. Otherwise, you would be more than well-aware of what it has to "do" with pretty-much everything in your entire life, including the very long part of it which you will suddenly enter one day when she dies, and STAYS dead forever, and it's too late to take-back sillyass questions.

Advisedly yours, as ever,

David Terry
