Hey, Japhy....
Jealous, much?

The March of the Wooden Sluts
Dear Salon:
You've run out of things to say about Paris, and so you've moved on to Perez. They're vampires, and you're an endless supply of Type O.
And so tiresome I can't even begin to tell you.

Gossip is gossip
Signorile makes a key point. Gossip columnists have long obsessed on the private lives of celebrities. Why shouldn't they dig the dirt on gays as well as straights?
Of course, Perez Hilton's is hardly a civil rights hero. But self-aggrandizement is what the celebrity world is all about. Why shouldn't Perez Hilton try for celebrity status himself? Is he less deserving than, say, Nicole Richie?
-
Why should I care?
Why should I care about this guy? And why are you people writing about him?

Rogers... Not Quite the Same Thing
I believe Mike Rogers' philosophy had a fundamental difference-- his stated goal was to out those who were gay, but worked for anti-gay policies through their positions in the government.
You may argue that his actions are still unacceptable. But I think it's significantly different from posting an actor's picture with an obscene drawing or comment written over it with the intention of suggesting that person is gay.
I've actually never heard of this Perez guy (admittedly, I'm not a big follower of celebrity gossip), and I hope I never do again. Blech.

Out everyone.
Mark Moford, of the San Fransico Gate, had a wonderful editorial article a couple months ago about how what the gay and lesbian movement needs is a Sports Hero to come out. Not after the fact when they're retired, but right now while they are peaking. The movement is at the point where we need a Barry Bonds, or NASCAR star to just pipe up and say "I'm fabulous and proud!"
Being that a lot of these popular, respected folks are so selfish, it comes down to being outed. The faster the world realizes that it's not a hidden, dirty thing to be gay, the better for everyone. Folks that hide are only thinking about themselves, not the community, and that's just not right anymore.
Our society has this backwoods mentality about sexuality and gender identification, and it needs to be put to rest. The quickest way to do that is to have the rich, powerful, popular and famous outed forcibly if they choose to be selfish and hide who they truly are from the public.
Sorry folks, but the time for the self-love to end and it's time for the community to be more important.

Boring
I can see why this was put on late at night, where it'll get pushed to the bottom of the heap by Friday morning.
I'm no Perez fan, but this essay says absolutely nothing new and offerns absolutely no incite. What is the point of this article?
You're a day late and a dime short, Salon. Perez, like 2006, is pretty much over.
-
hmm
This whole issue just seems like such a gigantic bitchfest.
I agree what he writer said about Perez being a modern-day gay stepinfetchit, but honestly...I think the easiest thing you can do to someone like Perez Hilton is the one that would hurt him the most -- just ignore him.
This is just giving him more press, and more attention, which is all he trades in and thrives on.
Just ignore him.
-
Seriously...
I never thought I'd see an article on Perez Hilton appearing in Salon. I read his site - I admit it, but I had thought better of Salon. Though I enjoy all your features on the likes of Paris Hilton and the celebrity gossip culture in general, I have to say that maybe you've gone a little too far in the quest for page hits. Perhaps there's something to all the complaints I've been reading in the letters secion lately. Has Salon lost its focus?
-
why?
who cares? why bother?
-
Move along....nothing to see here.
If they advocate against gay rights, out 'em. Otherwise, who cares what some air head celebrity/preacher/media twit is doing? As Jackson Browne sang, "I don't worry 'bout Madonna, or the next thing she might do." Celebrity gossip is tiresome and boorish.
-
Gay Twit
Normally, I avoid the celebrity articles on Salon but the gay thing caught my eye and I was bored. I never heard of Perez Hilton until this article. As a gay man who has been out of the closet for thirty years, I hope this is the last time I ever hear of him. What a twit.
-
A service to gays?
His photograph alone sets gay rights back 5 years.
-
What is "outing"?
I've long wondered about how to precisely define "outing." For many it is merely breaking the code of silence that many journalists have developed with gay stars and politicians. It allows these people to attend award shows, parties, clubs and practically every possible venue with a partner, spouse or same sex date, and the journalists choose not to report it in the MSM.
If Lance Bass is in Palm Springs with a man at a gay sex club, then is it really outing to report that? Or is it just more celebrity news? Mark Foley and his partner went to all the Republican functions together. Is he in the closet just because the press doesn't report it?
If celebrities or public figures wish to remain closeted (which I think of as being secretive and unwilling to give any clue of sexual orientation), then let them stay home. If they choose to bring a same sex date or partner, then they have made a statement, and the press should be free to report it.
I agree that reporting on these matters is just equalizing. Heterosexual celebs and politicians would be covered if they brought a date that wasn't their spouse or brought a new boy/girlfriend. Why should it be different for gays?
-
Can anyone...
...post a picture of P.H. next to a picture of Mark David Chapman. I'm not tech savy enough to do it myself. Maybe its just me but they could be brothers, no? Same assination mentality if nothing else.
-
Sorry, but
With all the crap going on in the world and the overpopulation and hatred and people in China unable to see the "incorrect" internet and this is what you print?
This is absolutly, positively not interesting for anyone outside of the glitter-dome and Salon is trivializing itself in new and different ways.
Printing dish about dish about dish? Sorry, I was wrong. This is not new and different. It is the oldest profession.
