The Sexiest Man Living
I eagerly await Salon's "The Sexiest Woman Living." Of course, I trust, there will be "nary a pretty-girl actor among them." And several of the sexy ones will be in their '60s! Fair, after all, is fair.

Where is Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon?
He of dreamy turquoise eyes, beautiful smile, and dark wavy hair... sigh.
I mean seriously, ladies, take a look.

Alan Rickman *is* pretty hot, now that you mention it, and of course... Paul Newman 4EVA.
-
Jeff Goldblum!
Jeff Goldblum and David Bowie, hands down.
Women:
Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Jada Pinkett Smith
Seriously, though, you guys need to do a list for women next. Cuz the ones that usually pop up in the mags are HURTIN' me.
-
Ian Mckellan cuddling please
And their list was not people-worthy? Ian McKellan in a heartbeat would be my choice.
A few others maybe, but Ian; you rock.

My Vote?
Barack Obama. Smart, eloquent, handsome and a positive vision for the future of American politics. Now that is sexy.
-
Too hard to pick one
But I say Viggo Mortensen. Hmmm.
-
Mark Ruffalo
Oh, you nailed it! I was at the Met in NYC recently and there is a Chuck Close portrait "Mark" which I am fairly certain is our dear boy. It was the teeth that convinced me. Younger but all there and of course Chuck Close would know him and decide to do his portrait! My niece's, now ex boyfriend, Billy was a dead ringer and we're really going to miss him.

My vote...
Personally I vote for the Irish singer/songwriter Luka Bloom. Sexy, passionate, prodigiously talented, political, quietly mystical (if his songs are any indication), and smart as a whip. Yum.
Yet I feel guilty for voting for yet another white man, because the letter writer who pointed out the lily whiteness of the Salon list has a very valid point.
-
puppy for prez!
It's so reassuring to see so many other people drooling over James Spader. He makes Boston Legal watchable, and that's saying a lot. Mmmmmmm....smarmy.
Someone said Barack Obama, but, eek, he's just so damn boyish-looking I feel like a pedophile for even entertaining the thought. He's got my vote for president, but I can't find him sexy until he grows into those ears. And hands. He's like a puppy. Aww.
[and then I wrote the title, see?]
-
Peter Sarsgaard
smart-seeming is sexy.
-
Reza Aslan
Iranian-American Islamic scholar Reza Aslan! Brains, looks, character ... what more could you want?
-
Great list, but....
Okay, so I give you huge props for including Jon Stewart and Alton Brown...but where is Anderson Cooper? Smart, stylish, sexy as hell...he should definitely be on this list.
-
the sexiest man
I was enjoying all of your choices, a perfect mix of brains, brawn, and just plain cuteness (the Philip Seymour Hoffman factor,)but then you came up with Alan Rickman and it all came to an end. For women of a certain age, certainly, (at least, my age, which we won't discuss,) but, also, I would argue, most other ages as well, since my teen-aged daughter adores him, too, Alan Rickman is HOT. He is a brilliant actor who is also simply gorgeous. (What took Kate Winslet so long in Sense and Sensibility, for heaven's sake, he was so much handsomer and everything else than that cad she was killing herself over!) Alan Rickman is incredibly sexy in the best of that lovely understated British way. Fabulous!

Alan Rickman
He's the only reason I'm still going to the Harry Potter movies!!

Sexy? NOT!
The choices made in this survey seem, to put it
mildly, perverse...a spatula in a man's hands as
sexy? Well, I can understand the Freudian symbolism,
but please! Give it a rest! Sexy and cooking never
are a match in my book...anyone who can pick up the
phone and place a takeout order would be sexier than
that...sorry, zero sex appeal...I know both straight
woman and gay men who seem to have this very sick
fantasy...
-
Another vote for David Strathairn
He can do craggy, he can do smooth...
-
A good list
but I think it could have been a little bit better. I definitely would have put Reza Aslan, Tony Leung, and Obama on the list.

Yes! Yes! God, yes!
Holy crap, Salon. I love you. This is an achievement. I counted no fewer than SEVEN gentlemen for whom I, ahem, feel strongly. It's like you've known me all my life.
Seriously. Reading this was such a relief. Flipping through "that other list" is incredibly alienating; how pleased I was to click into this Salon article and see, well, this. This list is so much more YES than any gossip rag, cataloguing the gamut, from sexpot comic to unlikely leading man. Brilliant.
And what's more, I'm pleased to glance through the letters and see nods to James Spader (hot!) and Tim Gunn (also hot!). I'd also like to submit Stanley Tucci, and maybe Liev Schreiber?, as two more guys who smoooooolder with smarts or depth, or whatever the mysterious X factor is.
And as for every jerk who ever said to me, "What? Philip Seymour Hoffman, why??" I will direct them here. Salon articulates it like nothing I've seen before: "He's got that great Saturday morning, other-side-of-the-bed voice, the voice of a guy who'd automatically hand you your favorite section of the paper." Apart from being ABSOLUTELY true, that's genius writing.
-
Mmmmen!
Charles Barkley. I know, I know. It's crazy. But he's adorable, with that bald head and silly smile and funny caterpillarish eyebrows framing his gorgeous eyes. And he's hilarious, which is always sexy.
I'd replace Seymour Hoffman with the deviously sexy and brilliant Peter Sarsgaard. Who doesn't love a man who gets to yell at Chloe Sevigny, even if it is pretend?
Also, whoever said Ray Nagin...holy hormones! He had me in a raging mess by the end of Spike Lee's Katrina documentary. He's another sexy baldie, with a fabulous laugh.

I know its wrong
Phil Jackson He reads and he plays basketball. Nuff said

This "List" needs to be an annual event
Great list! And here I thought I had Alan Rickman all to myself! To the letter writers, I most definitely second David Strathairn and Peter Sarsgaard. And to this list I'd add musician/producer, Nick Lowe. Sigh, these men are the dreamiest!
