absolutely chappelle
i have loved dave chappelle for many years. i am so glad others share my devotion.
it is the twinkle in his eye, but also the fact that he cracks himself up. that is so friggin sexy. i also have to agree about don cheadle, del toro (even as the fat lout in fear adn loathing), and eddie vedder.
another one i haven't seen on the list-micheal chiklis!!
something about that tough bald corrupt cop who will do anything for a little kid. love him!!

Thank you!
I'm so gratified to find that Alan Rickman's incredible presence is recognized and appreciated by so many others! And, while my husband is enjoying whatever topic Alton Brown is covering on "Good Eats," I'm secretly fantasizing about that fantastically attractive receding hairline and that smart humour.
We musn't forget sexy, talented John Turturro, of so many Coen brothers movies. Even his creepy turn as "Jesus" in "The Big Lebowski" was strangely moving.
Finally, to confirm my geekiness, I must nominate a couple of hotties from, yes, The Weather Channel: Paul Goodloe (known around my house as "the Chocolate Love God") and Jim Cantore. There's more than just global warming going on when they're on the screen!
-
And then there's Roger Federer
another man who is not classically handsome but his grace and charm and fluency in many languages makes him a very hot property. He always always makes the most gracious comments... and his catlike fluidity of movement..if we need another white guy. And yes Donald Sutherland..his voice (and you can still hear him on some commercials) is wonderfully suggestive. Yes this IS fun after several months of nervous-making political pressure.

no one mentioned
Craig Ferguson. WOW! I don't know if it's the merry, wicked twinkle in his eye as he's doing his monologue or the luscious Scottish brogue which makes me little - uh, heart - pitter pat, but that man has it going on!!!
I also like Eddie Izzard in eyeliner. He is so much more interesting that way, although I did see him doing his bit in street clothes and when he really got into it, there was a spark there....
John Edwards could never be President of the United States, he'd never get anything done. He'd be mobbed everywhere he went and spend all day answering fan mail. Oh, well. I'll vote for him if he runs.

Too many "plain, vanilla" men
Come on salon! I'm disappointed. No diversity at all.
-
One more Daily Show vote
Demetri Martin: goofy and lovely.
-
Sufjan, Sufjan!
This list is so much better than People's. I could not agree more w/"Salon Staff's" selection of Sufjan Stevens...
Great minds must think alike.

Can we have a lesbian heartthrob list next?
Just so I can nominate Samantha Bee?
-
What Fun!
I am deeply, penetratingly gratified to see so much evidence that women who read Salon can be as shallow and insipid on the topic of the opposite sex as can too many men. Whether it's orgasmic letter titles ("Yes! God, yes! Yes!" - please) or drooly metaphors, prosaic throat-clearing or virtual bar stool hopping, you ladies have shown yourselves to be every bit as bad as the average hard hat whistler. Congratulations.

Well Done
Nice change of pace, real live sexy dudishness. My dreams are of Rickman and Stewart...mrowr!
-
A few more...
Steve Buscemi in 'Ghost World' anyone? Am I the only one who found him very attractive in that film?
I noticed that someone proposed Neil Gaiman, the author. Yes!
www.neilgaiman.com
umm, Michael Richards as Kramer in Seinfeld?
And, I am surprised that more people didnt propose Bill Clinton...
He's the sexiest..

The Tabloid Cometh
Salon's picks are dead on. SEE? Liberals love themselves a little tabloid and really gobble it up if it has an intellectual twist. You missed out with...
Ewan McGregor - I could watch a movie of him every day.
Jamie Bamber - That near naked scene in Battlestar Galactica convinced me to start doing some crunches.
Viggo Mortensen - Greasy, dusty or clean this guy is it.
Zach Galifianakis - Lovable. Cuddly. Too smart for his audience. Just to show I'm not all man-tan and Teen People.

Let me add another Canadian...
...to Donald Sutherland, who's been mentioned.
Justin Trudeau, eldest son of the architect of modern-day Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
Google him.
He is physically and mentally beautiful, brilliant, and a devoted social activist. I pray someday he'll be my Prime Minister.
I'm twice his age and the day he married a couple of years ago I wore a black armband anyway.
And incidentally, Don Sutherland is my neighbour and I'll tell him you said hi :)

still very vanilla
good choices but not inspired choices and overall still pretty vanilla

Does the Sexiest Man Have to Be Caucasian?
I'm just wondering why on earth in 2006 you could not have chosen more than one man who wasn't white for your list. I mean, come on, Salon! The gross ethnocentrism of this list really makes one wonder. There are millions of Latino, Asian-American, Arab-American, and Native-American, let alone African-American and mixed-race men, who are smart, engaging, and could have aasily qualified for your list. Are you just not aware of them or do you just not care? Either way, it doesn't speak well for an online publication that likes to consider itself progressive and seeks a diverse and growing readership. Please, in the future, make an effort to step outside the narrow confines you appear to be operating in, and consider the US as it looks today, as well as the surely richer, broader aesthetic senses and tastes of your readership

I'd like to second the nomination of Kofi Annan, and add my wife's choice....
And I'll tell the story and make it longish since this is one that has cropped up yet. My wife says she also likes the intellect, the caring about others, and especially, sense of humor. For this reason, she picks someone she met and was acquainted with over a period of 6 months or so when she was college. This man was a political refugee who was down on his luck and was frankly in my wife's country, Korea, doing some fund - and consciousness - raising. He stayed during his visit at a dorm room in the Catholic college where my wife attended. She was struck by his humor in the face of harsh circumstances, which was not pollyannish at all, but an ability to maintain equilibrium based on a strong philosophic foundation. She has followed his career since, reads his books, catches his lectures when possible and her respect for him has has grown much over the years. For your consideration, the Dalai Lama.
