This was fun.
Thanks to the Salon staff. After weeks of engrossing myself in so much serious pre-election political news this was a much needed diversion.
It's not that the Brad Pitts of the world aren't sexy but the standard of beauty is mostly very narrow and then we're beat over the head with it in ads, TV and movies. I'm numb to it. In person, well, that's different. If I saw Brad Pitt on the street I'd probably find him stunning to look at. But hold up "perfection" to me often enough and I'm going to pick it apart to the point it's no longer attractive. Show me people who look different and I'm going to be interested and look long enough to find something sexy.
About twelve years ago I was sitting in a Foot Locker trying on a pair of sneakers and realized Donald Sutherland was sitting next to me trying a pair on. He stood up and I heard his voice and thought, wow, attractive. His nose is really large, he was well into his sixties then, I'm sure...but he had a presence and somehow it all worked and there was sex appeal there. Hell, I walked past Kofi Annan in Central Park a couple years ago and found him so very striking somehow. I think maybe sex appeal that's more than fleeting is rooted in talent, a little power, articulation that's uncommon but never pompous...and a killer suit (the Secretary General can wear the hell out of a suit, I must say).
Wow. Good thing I was never a White House intern because I'm sounding more like Monica Lewinksky than I like.
So when will we get the Sexiest Women?
