Oscar castrates himself The Academy celebrates niceness, bleeps out "bitch" and pats itself on the back for good behavior. And what did they do to poor Jon Stewart?

  • Right On

What more can I say? A nauseating evening capped off by the biggest weasel cop out. I actually watched for some escapist pleasure only to feel confronted again by this hideous capitulation to right wing pressure. What hypocrites to be so self congratulatory while spinelessly kissing ass.

Crash? Are you kidding me? Stiff, sterotyped, shallow, shriekingly in your face Crash?

To quote Bill Mahr, "I don't hate America, I'm EMBARRASSED by America."

I looked for some commentary the next day and for ten seconds all I heard was right wing radio ranting about George Clooney?

    What a country.

  • Jesus still loves you, Lynda

Despite the semi-literate hate you spew on an Internet message board, Jesus still loves you. He weeps for your ignorance and stupidity, but He loves you. However, that bastardized golden calf McJesus that your phony "Christian" preachers worship fully approves of your witless ignorance and shamefully shallow logic. So go ahead and send more money to whatever hateful idol you truly worship, but just remember that once upon a time, "Christianity" was about tolerance and love.

C.S. Lewis was a Christian apologist, but there isn't enough paper in the world to apologize for a "Christian" like you.

  • Stephanie Zacharek for next year's Oscars Please!

Um...in my letter regarding Cintra, (about 10 pages ago) I omitted to mention about Steph. As far as Salon.com reviewers go, she is unquestioningly the best. Generally I hate critics and make up my own mind about what I want to watch. However, Steph's articles are insightful, perceptive and (truly) witty. I find it eerie how closely she sometimes echoes my opinions on movies.

As to Cintra, well, y'know...read my previous post. "Nuff said.

And as for Dahlia on Black Women Should be Outraged...What the hell? Are you trying to start something? I'm sick of people who mention Black women as if they're some sort of alien species or the "backward" cousin no one talks about at family gatherings. Black women chose not to be at the Oscars 2006 because there were no categories that they felt pertinent to them this year.

Black women have nothing to be ashamed about. That they may be underrepresented in the media is this country's sad loss, as they are some of the most beautiful women on earth. I went to school with some girls who ( with no makeup, or artificial lighting, designer clothing or boob jobs) made your jaw drop. Thank God I grew up to be beautiful as well, because back then, I felt I didn't compare.

This debate is entertaining. Carry on...

  • Oh Me, Oh My........

    Still rotfl.....

My dear, dear, detrators.....ahem......Jesus has WON the battle....so not to worry about box office amounts. Hee hee it will just allow good ol' Mel to do more good work etc, etc, etc.

And to the dear kind soul that says Christianity is about tolerance.....my dear soul, you better look up the word. Christ does not tolerate sin. End of story. Otherwise, there would be no need for a cross.

Yes, Jesus loves me.....and all of you....and all of the ButtBack Boys, etc, etc, etc.

We all share the basic need of forgiveness and redemption.

Ah shucks, can't a Christian poke a little fun once in awhile too???? WWJD?

    And the Oscar goes to......................

  • Another Black woman's perspective.

Dahlia -- Save your outrage for something more important. Why in the world would you expect black women to play a significant role in the Oscar ceremonies when Black women do not play a significant role in movies or Hollywood. You can't blame the Academy for Hustle & Flow. Blame Terence Howard for agreeing to star in it.

I was laughing with Queen Latifah. I bet a lot of the people voted for the Pimp song thinking it would never win. Well, the joke's on them.

It's unfortunate that the movies do not have present more positive portrayals of black women. It is also unfortunate when we help them to do it. To the extent we do not already do so, we need to boycott movies with negative messages about black women. We need to reject rap music that degrades black women and encourage the men in our live to do the same. Ultimately, we cannot rely on Hollywood to be a cheerleader for black people. We need to do that ourselves.

  • Colleen Atwood: best costume

Does anyone know where there's an image of Colleen Atwood at the Oscars? As I recall, her dress was luscious, but because she isn't a starlet I can't find an image of it anywhere?

  • Re: Hustle & Flow/Born Into Brothels

Like gee whiz....wasn't it just last year that all of Oscar humanity was boo hoo hooing and paying attention to the very real and sad society we allow with Born Into Brothels. What a difference a year makes. Now we have Hollyweird all pimped out and jazzing up a song while exploiting black women (as if our culture doesn't do this enough already)and the KICKER is....that Hustle and Flow is about the true down & out, non-blinged category of the pimp...the real stuff baby ~ not the audacious Hollyweird stuff that we witnessed on Monday night. You ever seen a real pimp on Hollyweird Boulevard? You ever seen a real 'trick' getting her ever-lovin' face slapped? Well, I have....more than once....it ain't pretty, and it shouldn't get awards.

If I had one wish, I would wish that all the rich black atheletes, entertainers, musicians, business people, etc, etc, would declare WAR on the slavery that drugs and poverty keep their race in. I wish they would put their money into this lifestyle and bring about a change.

What a difference a year makes.

  • What happened to the rest of the world at the Oscars?!

Didn't they used to show clips of the foreign films that were nominated? This year they were treated like a minor technical award. And the presenter--Will Smith I believe--attempted some lame jokes about foreign languages that were, frankly, insulting. (So much for "diversity.") Couldn't they have chosen an "international" presenter? After all, some of them even speak English. Camille Paglia picked up on this American provincialism during the podcast but was drowned out by the screechy Cintra babbling on about something. You don't have to read the trades to know that foreign income is becoming a BIG part of Hollywood's financial calculations. All the more stunning that the Academy Awards couldn't be bothered to acknowledge, even minimally, global audiences.
