Dahlia -- Save your outrage for something more important. Why in the world would you expect black women to play a significant role in the Oscar ceremonies when Black women do not play a significant role in movies or Hollywood. You can't blame the Academy for Hustle & Flow. Blame Terence Howard for agreeing to star in it.
I was laughing with Queen Latifah. I bet a lot of the people voted for the Pimp song thinking it would never win. Well, the joke's on them.
It's unfortunate that the movies do not have present more positive portrayals of black women. It is also unfortunate when we help them to do it. To the extent we do not already do so, we need to boycott movies with negative messages about black women. We need to reject rap music that degrades black women and encourage the men in our live to do the same. Ultimately, we cannot rely on Hollywood to be a cheerleader for black people. We need to do that ourselves.
