Critics' Picks

What you need to see, read, do this week: Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn return; Beck's back, too, and in great form.

The letters thread is now closed.

Beck

I agree that Modern Guilt is the best Beck album to come along in a while, and thank God for that.

But I do differ with Heather's premise a bit, since I would also put Mutations, Midnite Vultures, and Sea Change in with the lot of masterpieces along with Mellow Gold and Odelay (not to mention the great One Foot in the Grave.)

But regardless, I, like her, have been waiting for a reason to be excited about Beck again. A reason not provided by the okay Odelay wanna be Guero (though there's still some good stuff on it) and the extremely underwhelming The Information. A lot of these albums just have this strangely muddy, dreary, and worst of all BORING sound to them (a sound he ALMOST falls back into just a bit in the middle section of Modern Guilt.)

But yeah, Modern Guilt has just the right combination of the "Beck sound" and his trademark adventurousness to be pretty great. Here's hoping this is a sign that he's out of the rut and the next one will be another true masterpiece to add to the collection.

Beck + Danger Mouse

A sound brewed in the bowels of a room full of A&R guys and lawyers. Or in other words "Whoever's really 'out there' + whomever's hot now".

SAVING GRACE the TV series - the 'ABSURDIST' PHILIOSOPHY of life by ALBERT CAMUS...

Now before i get deluged with 'EXISTENTIAL WARRIORS' harping about CAMUS 'nihilistic outlook' on society in say books like L'ETRANGER and others; allow me to offer up the following scenario for SAVING GRACE the HOLLY HUNTER series on TBS recounting the 'adventures' of OKLAHOMA DETECTIVE GRACE HANADARCO. In this show GRACE is obcessed/plagued with an angel EARL - who is aware of her and all others human failings. GRACE is a 'lapsed' CATHOLIC - a brother of hers is a priest - another is a fireman - while GRACE is plagued with memories of her dead sister who perished in the MURA FEDERAL BUILDING bombing wuth so many others because GRACE was too drunk to baby-sit for her that day --- shades of 'MERSEAULT' blaming/not blaming himself for 'MAMANS' death in L'ETRANGER perhaps??? Is G-D dead to GRACE because she had been sexually abused with so many others at the parochial school she attended as a girl by a pedophile priest??? WHO KNOWS??? Does the angel EARL fathom the dark depths in GRACE's soul??? GRACE makes her way through the world breaking/trampling a large portion of G-D's commandments; drinking to excess, various forms of sexual congress with all ages of men - married or not - coworkers or not(sure to be a 'sapphic dalliance' in a future episode), lies constantly, drives her own Porsche 911 in violation of the accepted speed/driving/cleanliness laws re:candy-wrappers junk food containers all over the interior, likes pork rinds, beer + shooters, smokes incesssantly, and is not above lying to her mother, relatives, about her deceased father or the aspects of her life. To put it quite succinctly SAVING GRACE is a well written, thought provoking show that leaves you like the 'ending' in CAMUS L'ETRANGER --- wondering. GRACE HANADARCO -the perfect nihilist with a soul and duity as a 'cop'/detective in 'RED-STATE/OKIELAND to be our guide through life's vaguearies. CATCH IT ON THE TUBE ON MONDAY NIGHTS.

Ya gotta read "Consumption" by Kevin Patterson

I've been waiting most of the week for the opportunity to say that.

This novel captures the last half of the twentieth century when the Inuits came in "off the land" and into the "southerners" civilization.

The plot is good, the characters memorable, but, for me, the best part was the information about history and culture that was built into the narrative. With reason and conviction, as Kevin Patterson was building upon his own experience and medical work in the region.

The best book I've read this year (and I average 2 books a week).

Dr. Horrible has made my day!

...possibly my week. Love musicals, love NPH and love Joss Whedon. Plus the gorgeous Nathan Fillion (a fellow Canuck!). How could this show be any better?
