The Fix

Whitney's "really broke." Hasselhoff divorce gets nasty. Plus: Lindsay Lohan's dad speaks out from prison.

The letters thread is now closed.

I know it's just pop-culture gossip and showbiz news...

... but can we get an editor to look at this page before it's posted, please?

Yes! We knew we were better than Gwyneth Paltrow!

I look forward to reading The Fix - it is a welcome mental break from the news, and spares me the humiliation of purchasing US magazine. I appreciate being able to read it without getting worked up into a political snit, so imagine my surprise at finding myself sending a letter to the editor over an entry in it's posting. Nontheless, here I am, in response to, "A pregnant Gwyneth Paltrow -- the same mother who once said, "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup" -- was spotted at a sushi restaurant in Lower Manhattan, drinking Guinness."

I sing praises to the PR campaign that has highlighted the dangers of heavy drinking during pregnancy. But, be warned pregnant women, have ONE drink with a meal during your pregnancy, and face a public shaming. Though, when time comes to deliver that same baby, and you just can't cope with it all (none of us could!), feel free to get injected with any number of narcotics, barbituates, and tranquilizers at your disposal. If given at the correct time in labor, they'll work out of your baby's system and we can all pretend there was no effect. If not, and out of the womb your baby experiences abnormal heart rate, decreased reflexes, lack of ability to suckle, or difficulty breathing - oops, ahhh, we'll be taking your baby for a while. And, by the way, if you intend to birth at home naturally, we're gonna look at you like you are completely insane and don't care about your baby's health - how could you???

I'm not asking you to like Gwyneth Paltrow, or any other pregnant celebrity, but please refrain from joining in the tattle-fest of monitoring every drop of beverage that enters their mouths. It's just hypocritical and swarmy.

Guiness can be good for you

Do to its extremely high iron content, drinking small amounts of guiness is actually recommended for preganant women in Ireland.

I think Gwen is totally within her rights

It's totally an American thing that a woman should never, ever, ever drink during her pregnancy. In France doctors are fine with a glass of wine once in a while, apparently in Ireland, some beer is ok. When I was in Europe I saw a few pregnant women with an adult beverage, calm down. I also know plenty of women who drank during their pregnancies and their children are perfectly bright and healthy.

As for cup-o-noodles, well I wouldn't eat it either if I was a rich oscar winner married to a lead singer of a popular band. But I'm not, so sometimes 99 cents on a meal is just going to have to do.

Have to say I agree with Gwen.

I would never feed my son cup-a-soup, whatever that is.

But I'm also near the end of my second trimester with my second kid--and I do enjoy my weekly glass of wine, and the fact that when I drink publicly in this progressive, mellow city, no one gives my any shit about it. Thank god I don't live in New York.

Cheers, Gwen.

Hasselhoff, Whitney and Gwynneth

So which kind of addict is harder to deal with? An abusive badgering drunk allegedly like Hasselhoff or a manipulative spineless cokehead allegedly like Whitney?

I think it's a tossup. But for some reason, society treats them quite differently.

As for Gwynneth Paltrow, she seems to be okay with judging what other people consume, so she's totally set herself up for this one.

By the way, there are a lot of foods that contain iron that don't contain alcohol. It's funny that the Irish should choose Guiness from all of the possible alternatives.

Well actually, given the amount of hardcore alcoholism in Ireland, maybe it isn't so funny after all.

Oye Gevalt!

I can't believe i'm responding to these comments, but I am.

On Whitney—if you read the Fox News 411 article, it's actually really sad. Her situation has gone beyond the joke from several years ago of "Crack is Whack" on Primetime Live to complete and utter self-destruction. She had been the main financial support (according to Fox News) for some 30-40 relaltives from Bobby Brown's family for several years and this is one of the reasons she's broke (plus her drug habit and mismanagement of her career). Add to this a isolating drug addiction that is like cement blocks on your feet, and a husbands family that SHOULD be emotional supportive, yet is selling personal information to the press for their own personal financial gain...I don't know..This is just a giant train wreck and I can't help but feel incrediblly sorry for her. This doesn't mean that she should keep her kid or stay with Bobby Brown.

On Gwenynth—50 years ago women drank high balls and smoked cigs while they were pregnant. Granted the surgeon general and doctors determined this wasn't healthy for the fetus, but how many babies were born 50 years ago to mothers who did drink and smoke while they were pregnant? And how many of those babies turned out perfectly healthy? This is all about minimizing risk for the fetus, but we as a society have somehow come to view choices that a pregnant woman makes as almost "predetermined" and if they differ in anyway from cookie cutter selection, it's child abuse. I love the post about all the drugs that doctors insist women injest during child birth, but god forbid a woman throws back a glass of wine and cup of coffee.

On David Hasselhoff-who is this?

Gwyn and the *gasp* BEER

I live in Europe. When I was pregnant, my OB/GYN actually recommended a Guiness every once in a while.

It's also fantastic for nursing mothers, because it promotes milk production.

Sushi is much worse for pregnant and nursing mothers.

I'm actually much more annoyed at Paltrow's being judgy-pants attitude about cup-a-soup. She'd rather DIE?
