So one insane fan takes things too far and it's a rise of misogyny? I find it funny that Salon also mentions "Stan," a song where a fan takes things too far and Eminem writes back telling the guy to ease up, but of course it's too late by then. The misogyny he sings about is him venting his frustration with the women in his life. Ain't that the whole point of music? To convey emotion through song? The only thing I fault Eminem with is the gay issue, there really is no justification for that crap and a point I agree with Moby on. Especially since Eminem came out and said he doesn't have a problem with gays which just makes it worse.
In Eminem's song "Stan", the perp locks his girlfriend in the trunk of his car and drives his car off a bridge. The perp does not beat her to death and stuff her in a suitcase. So the act committed in real life is not at all similar to the act described by Eminem in his song.
Also, the song "Stan" does not approve of this violence. In the context of the song, the woman's murder is seen as a heinous tragedy. To the narrator Slim Shady, the perpetrator is viewed as someone doing "some crazy shit" that "made me sick".
Where is the similarity to Stan, other than the fact of a murder itself? And how does "Stan" encourage violence against women? The point of the song seems opposite to what is being claimed by Moby. Slim Shady even tells the perp to treat his girlfriend better, before he realizes he's about two weeks too late with this advice.
Maybe we should put Moby in charge of a campaign to remove everything from the world that discusses violence against women. Shakespeare will have to go first, because "Othello" is simply unacceptable. Andrea Dworkin's work will have to be banned as well, because her stock and trade is a lot more graphic and disturbing than anything Eminem has come up with so far.
And we'll have to get rid of the Lifetime Network entirely, because they make their money from female victims getting even. Victimization and empowerment are so closely linked in Lifetime movies that a person could get the idea that violence is actually good for women, because it helps them grow and change.
Man-boobs develop in heavy alcohol consumers (male) because alcohol consumption promotes estrogen production and decreases testosterone levels. This is also why alcoholic men often have fine heads of hair, as testosterone is closely linked with male-pattern baldness. Clearly, whatever else Colin Farrell may be consuming, if he's sweating a lot and showing man-boobs, there's a nice dose of booze in the mix.
Golly, Eminem writes lyrics that might be considered objectionable? Welcome to five years ago, Moby. Around the end of the time you were considered relevant, right?
What kind of music would you prefer to hear on MTV, Moby? (disregarding the fact that music is no longer allowed within forty feet of MTV) I know! How about that song from that car commercial? You know, the one with the oh-so-retro gospel sample and sleepy bass line? Or the one from the Bailey's commercial? Or the American Express commercial? Or that department store commercial, remember that? You know what the record companies should do? They should release albums of ad music! Wouldn't that be awesome? And the people who wrote the ad music can act all anti-establishment and pretend like their money doesn't come from the very corporations they claim to be evil.
Adults are really just big kids, you know. They aren't mature enough to hear songs dealing with anger and violence, because they'll just try to mimic it, those silly little troglodytes. Better just to put "Play" in the CD player and forget all about scary stuff like that.
