Why Celine Dion's "You and I" is a good choice as Hillary Clinton's campaign song.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • Campaign Theme

Does this mean Obama's theme song should be some hip indie rock jam? How about the Go Team's "The Power is On" or LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah"? Spoon's "Something to Look Forward to" or Annie's "The Greatest Hit?" This game is fun.

  • Probably a good choice to warm the cockles of . . .

. . . middle America's heart. But as Celine Dion makes anyone with a scintilla of taste physically ill, does she really want to risk it? I mean, the dreadful Christine McVie penned Fleetwood Mac song used by her husband was bad enough. Furthermore, Celine Dion isn't an American. Won't the right have fun with that?

  • Agreed

That's the bit I find hilarious. Not just "not-an-American" but a French Canadian! The right is going to have a field day.

  • bad news

all this scares me that we (democrats) will lose again. An online vote? For Celine Dion, I dont know if I'm more scared of Hillary who made this decision or her supporters who voted. Gak, we're going to lose again. Thanks HIllary for further dumbing down our democracy and thanks for losing the Whtie HOsue for us.

  • Clinton theme song

And to think they passed on the Clash's "Should I stay Or Should I go?" I can't think of a song that would do more justice to her waffling on Iraq.

  • Bought and Paid For

The interesting thing that appears to have been missed there is that "You and I" was pretty much comissioned by Air Canada to be the theme of their ad campaign. It was played on almost every plane as it was boarding. As well, the video for the song (which played on most major music networks) was filmed at Pearson International Airport and featured shots of pilots, planes, and happy couple reuniting. All that was missing were logos for Air Canada.

Basically a corporate anthem. Draw your own conclusions from there.

  • Hillary and Dion

I think Marchese and most of the posts are making way too much out of this. Drawing inferences about her character from it is unwarranted and unwise. Some people will gratefully use any reason (valid or not) to trash her. I don't like the song, but it says nothing about Hillary's character, or her stance on health care, the Iraq War, or anything else. (Except maybe her musical tastes, which have no bearing on how she would govern.)

  • On With the Show!

The hell with the song; did anyone see the promo short that was posted on the Hillary for President myspace, showing the senator in a diner with the former president? It elicited some chuckles from me, as it showed a semi-stiff Hil seated across from Bill, him complaining about the basket of carrots she ordered for them. "Don't I get any onion rings?" He asks sheepishly. Indeed!

Queen's "The Show Must Go On" might have been a more appropriate choice for the Hillary campaign.

Let's not forget the songs of campaigns past:

Someone already mentioned "Don't Stop." Three members of Fleetwood Mac are British, two of them were alcoholics, one was a cocaine addict, all had multiple affairs.

And of course, Reagan's memorable "Born in the USA," a damning indictment of all that was wrong with the country at the time.

Hillary has a generic song written by a happily married and substance-abuse free French-Canadian loved by millions of Americans (who probably don't even know she is French-Canadian). I'm underwhelmed, but not concerned.

  • the song stinks

but it's the fact that Hillary decided to have an internet vote for her campaign song that's scary.

  • Oh please NO!!!

Thus another reason to never listen to any politician's ads or campaign stuff in general. Celine Dion? Originally a song for Canada Air? WTF!!!! My respect for Senator Clinton went down quite a bit on hearing this news.

  • Have it our way

Not a problem - all she's gotta do to show cred is get some Celine remixes going by Burnt Friedman and Timbaland, with a Peter Gabriel intro. She could still pull it off.

Personally I voted for Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades (Moby Remix)", but you don't see me crying.

  • Another Reason Not To Vote For Hillary

This is a horrible choice. I randomly selected five CD's from my collection and was able to pick a better song from each of them.

    LIGHT MY FIRE-The Doors

AIN"T WASTING TIME NO MORE-The Allman Brothers

    AMERICAN IDIOT-Green Day

GIRL, YOU HAVE NO FAITH IN MEDICINE- The White Stripes

    BUSINESS-Eminem

For some more suggestions, read this post and enjoy the show.

  • Wimmen!

Um, the song choice couldn't have anything to do with Clinton's disproportionately female following, could it?

  • Hm

You know, David, every single thing you said about Celine Dion can be applied, pretty much without modification, to Steve Perry. Let's see:

"[He] isn't about nice; [he]'s about shrewdly winning you over."

"When the chorus comes, and [Perry] trains [his] destructo-beam voice on those poor vowel sounds and blows them into the stratosphere, a powerful argument has been made. You can either recoil at [Journey]'s superhuman abilities or succumb to them. As the sales numbers mentioned above suggest, a significant number of people have chosen the latter course."

"Dripping with bombast and sagging with schmaltz, "[Open Arms]" is the musical equivalent of all-you-can-gorge buffets and "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?""

    And so on.

    Ah, music! So subjective!
