Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet

Sorry, but the music of that era, on average, was and remains VASTLY better than the music of our own. And I'm not a Boomer.

D.A. Pennebaker Film

I highly recommend the Criterion Collection's 3 DVD Complete Monterey Pop. Disc one is the original film. Disc two presents the complete performances by Hendrix and Otis Redding, and Disc 3 is outtakes.

As far as performances, well, everyone knows Hendix, but Janis' take on Ball and Chain is simply devastating.

not so much

"Sorry, but the music of that era, on average, was and remains VASTLY better than the music of our own."

There was plenty of godawful music being written in the '60s too, and there's plenty of great music being written now. We tend to remember only the great bands and songs because they're, well, great, while it's hard to escape today's mediocrities without totally shutting out society, and that colors our perception. Furthermore, the music of the '60s may be, on average, more to your taste than a lot of what's out there now.

But to say that the music of one era was "VASTLY better" than that of another is silly.

Airplane

I was in Haight-Ashbury from April until August of 67 and saw many of the bands whose legend has outstripped the reality of the day. I once saw Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Avalon. They were the worst, ever. It was hard to believe that Janis went on to such glory...

In my opinion the Airplane was THE best band of the times. They did a show in the Panhandle that still stands out as the best live performance of the summer.

I am now a 58 year-old who spends a lot of time banging on my guitar and Somebody to Love is one of my regular songs. I would also highly reccommend Surrealistic Pillow as one of the best albums of the era.

Remember all of it

I'm 60 years old, and I love music from the 60s. BUT, there was also Tommy James and the Shondells and a host of other garbage bands. Nirvana or Green Day or the Clash or many others stack up quite nicely against 60s music.
