  • definitive bull___

    1 Velvet Underground & Nico; 2 Double Nickles on the Dime - Minutemen;

    3 Marquee Moon - Television; 3&4 I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight; Shoot Out the Lights - Richard & Linda Thompson; 5 The Band- The Band;

    6 Hoboken Saturday Night - The Insect Trust; 7 Let It Be - The Replacements;

8 Astral Weeks - Van Morrison; 9 New Day Rising - Husker Du; 10 Patti Smith - Horses (6 of these albums are frequently on my ever change top 10 all-time list. Okay the list is done now for the rant. I know everyone has their own tastes and I respect that; however if the Rock & Roll Hall is sponsoring a list of greatest album they should be Rock & Roll albums. Where are the greatest hits albums (I wouldn't include them, but they did include Elvis' Sun material which was never intended as an album & numerous soundtrack albums where most of material is previously released). Celine Dion & Kenny G give me a break. If either of them belong here so do The Cowsills or The Osmonds or The Partridge Family [Can anyone say Josie & the Pussycats). Personally the Jazz & CW albums while deserving don't belong on a Rock and Roll list. And how can anyone rate an album that has only recently been released. I'd say give it at least 5 maybe 10 yrs. (Last year the NME named the greatest albums of all time, The Arctic Monkeys [WHO?] where in the top 10. No Elvis Costello, No Patti Smith, No Chuck Berry, No Roy Orbison, No Band; No Buzzcocks, No Joy Division or New Order, a lame duets album instead of either of Santana's first 2 albums. Who picked this list? Do they even like rock and roll? If the list is any indication they are clueless. I'm going to be profane where in the f--- is Layla. This list is so pathetic as to be useless. Please identify who chose this list so I'll know never to trust they're judgement abut music.

  • "Definitive," not "Greatest," Bob

    There's a difference.

  • That was fun. Here's my top ten off the top of my head.

    Frank Zappa: Over-nite Sensation

Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer: Tanglewood Tree

Jimi Hendrix: Axis Bold As Love

Bruce Cockburn: Dancing In The Dragon's Jaw

    Patti Smith: Radio Ethiopia

    Grateful Dead: Live Dead

    Jefferson Airplane: Bark

Stevie Wonder: Songs In Tha Key Of Life

    Little Feat: Waiting For Columbus

Clem Snide: The End Of Love

  • Here goes...

    1. "Murmur", R.E.M.

    2. "Let It Be", The Replacements

    3. "Translate Slowly", The Rievers.

    4. "Zen Arcade", Husker Du.

    10f. "The Clash", The Clash.

  • Forgot Somethings...

    1a. "Entertainment", Gang of Four.

(How could I forget the second greatest album of all time?)

    10g. "Armed Forces", Elvis Costello.

10h. "Exile in Guyville", Liz Phair.

    That's all.

P.S.: The inclusion of Journey invalidates this list above all the other multitude of invalidators.

  • What!?

It's silly to leave "Blonde on Blonde" off their list.

And add "More Fun in the New World"(X) to the list of the missing.

  • Let me try.

    Here's my little attempt:

    1. The Clash - London Calling

    2. David Bowie - Low

    3. Nirvana - In Utero

    4. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

    5. Pixies - Surfer Rosa

    6. Radiohead - OK Computer

  • not so bad a list

These lists are impossible in any event. How can anyone create a list that is trying to cover the waterfront from John Coltrane to country music. This list does not seem so bad. I would make an arbitrary rule of only one album per group. Seems to me the list is also too much oriented toward the late 90s. Trying to keep the listmakers' purposes in mind, I do not think they would be putting the Stooges, the Smiths, Broken Social Scene, or Lou Reed on the list, or even Pavement or Tom Waits, even though they would be on mine. Along with something from the Elvis Costello, Jefferson Airplane, Allmans, Cream. I am not sure Audioslave should not be on there. Also, maybe Justin Timberlake or Nelly Furtado. Something with Timbaland on production. My list, not going too out of the main stream would include Cure, Gillian Welch, Little Feat, and Jesse Winchester's first album, but it is not my list.

Sticking with the over scheme, it seems to me they inexplicably left off (I know that these repeat what some others have said):

    1. Jimi Hendrix--Electric Ladyland, just as the author of the article said

    2. The Band--The Band

    3. Blondie--Parallel Lines (how could they leave this one off? fits all the criteria)

    4. Jefferson Airplance--Surrealistic Pillow (could make an argument for other albums of theirs)

    5. Neil Young--After the Gold Rush (I do not think Everybody Knows This is Nowhere fits the overall list; Harvest was popular, it jsut seems no mundane)

    6. Joni Mitchell--Court and Spark (How did they leave this one off? I have come to love Blue even more, but I think this was by far the bigger album at the time.)

    7. Allman Brothers Band--Live at the Fillmore East

    8. Cream--Disreali Gears or Crossroads

    9. Dereck and the Dominos--Laya (you all can keep each and every one of the Clapton albums--I do not think any belong on any top 200 list)

    10. Linda Rhondstat--Heart Like a Wheel (fits in the spirit of the list; just huge in the 70s; I happen to think her work then holds up; I do not care if she wrote any of it)

  • rtrac3y , I love you!

Real love. Not just the way I feel when I see how cute Shania Twain is.

  • I prefer most of the list

over most of the posters' alternate choices. Sure there are some good albums that would beb on the top 500 list, after all there are only 200 slots on this list.

I don't understand music poseurs obsessions with:

    1. Elvis Costello- whiny dick

    2. Radiohead- obnoxious self indulgent irrational drivel

    3. Wilco- more crap, and unlistenable dim crap at that

But really, Rage Against the Machine should be on there if it isn't. As someone said Living Colour should also be on there.

And where is Boxcar Willie on this list? B.J. Thomas? Asia? Sigue Sigue Sputnik??? Tiny Tim?!?

    C'mon PEOPLE!!!
