Two new contenders step up
The letters thread is now closed.
  • "Tenochitlan," the Mammoth

2 reasons -- pop is not my flavor, and I am a sucker for melancholy, mournful music.

3 times out of 3 I have voted for the second song! I see a pattern here.

  • "A Jagged Gorgeous Winter"

Both of these bands have obvious inspirations, but that isn't the point. The Main Drag's "A Jagged Gorgeous Winter" is a great song - catchy, melodic, sweet & earnest pop. (Barsuk - take notice!) And I would rather listen to a great song that sounds a little like someone else than a completely unique song that isn't great.

Speaking of missing the point...how amusing are these people whinging on about Audiofile's Song Search?! Apparently they have all just realized they are reading AUDIOFILE. If you don't like Bartlett's taste (which, after like 3 years, is not so difficult to predict), if you don't care for the mp3 blogs Audiofile links to, and if you remain frustrated by the lack of klezmer-inspired songs about swashbuckling, then for goodness sake, quit complaining and start your own mp3 blog!

If you can manage to spotlight (and do a good job writing about) music that is both truly unique AND worth telling the blogosphere about, then you might convince Bartlett et al. to link to your blog!

  • Dark omens....

for they are clearly the future of independent music, and salon has always been on the cutting edge of new and exciting developments in independent music

    I sincerely hope you're wrong.

  • stop whining

    there is no conspiracy here

there is also no accounting for taste

if you think the judges have made poor decisions

then either start your own contest, enter other contests,

or just keep making music for yourself.

of course, you're protected by the bill of rights

to bitch, moan, and cry all you want

    but please

    it's making you look bad

(even those of you who think you're posting anonymously - psychic's

are real and they read Salon!)

    my advice is:

    write more songs

    and less cry-baby missives

and we'll all be better off

  • Better of a sad pair

Randomly dropped by. I love contests, but boy what a snooze both of these songs are! Slightly preferred "Mammoth," though I'd happily avoid both...

  • Ska?

Is no one going to address the ludicrously retarted charge that Jagged Gorgeous Winter is a Ska song or sounds like Reel Big Fish? I think that has to be one of the more uninformed comments I've ever read.

And I don't think the songs are boring at all. I much prefer the first one to mammoth.

  • The Griping Is Justified

I did not enter this contest, and I don't know anyone who did, so there's nothing up my sleeve. I am, however, a lifelong music lover, music writer, and music history instructor, so I'm not spouting off half-cocked either. I have to agree with the readers who are dissatisfied with this contest. So far the choices have either been snoozefests or amateurish (and not in the cool, lo-fi sense, just "not good." If wispy, melancholy sounds and self-consciously arty schlock are the future of popular music, well, I'll have to settle for UNpopular music, I guess. In any case, this contest has been a bust - so much so I've heard people recommending it to others as a great "bad joke."
