One reason for the controversial status was becuase early versions of the vinyl LP had a track that sampled people reciting verses from the Koran. This track was later rep[laced on subsequent vinyl versions (and, I presume, the CDs). Still a great LP though.
Great album -- I didn't realize anybody else liked it. Total genius at work.
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is one of those albums I played over and over, and not just because it was great when I was stoned. Brian Eno has the musical Midas touch, and his collaboration with Byrne, like his collaboratio with Bowie, produced works of genius.
As for the cultural imperialism charge: I'm a guy who can be considered P.C. in many ways (though the term "P.C." started out as a joke amongst leftists and now is used only by brain-dead conservatives in lieu of an argument), but I consider that charge utter nonsense.
I have the first issue CD, and that track is on there. A friend of mine had the first issue vinyl, and the tracks were identical. It was originally song number six, after "The Jezebel Spirit". I never realized it had been removed. That's sad, actually, because it's a beautiful piece. All in all, this album is still as amazing to me as when it first came out.
Ok, I'm having a little fun with y'all. Per this website, Byrne &Eno had to remove the bits of Jezebel Spirit that had the voice of evangelist Katherine Kuhlman. http://www.talking-heads.net/bushofghosts.html
A bootleg entitled 'Ghosts' contains some different versions and unreleased tracks from the 'Bush Of Ghosts' sessions, including the original version of 'The Jezebel Spirit' with the uncleared samples of Katherine Kuhlman. See the bootleg survey for more details
This has been one of my favorite albums since it first came out. I'm really glad it's being rediscovered, and I hope that it inspires more collaborations with David Byrne and others and Brian Eno and others -- they are fantastically creative musicians.
