This version is a little too "pretty" for me. Although I love Joni Mitchell's original, the Robert Downey Jr. version is my favorite. He has a world-weary tone that fits the song perfectly.
Sigh. No, it sure doesn't have the heartbreaking intimacy of Joni Mitchell's version. In fact, it sounds a lot like James Taylor, which I suppose is okay if you like the James Taylor sound. But I liked him better when he chose songs that suited him, rather than just shoehorning songs into the James Taylor sound. This is heartbreaking, but not in the right way.
This is an insipid cover of Joni Mitchell's great song. I like James Taylor's music but he butchers this delicate and heartbroken song. Like your reviewer, I don't get it why Good King Wenceslas is inserted instead of Jingle Bells.
