...if done well, would be awesome, but I fear it would mostly appear to hard-core comic geeks, as most of the major characters are represented in it. If you don't know who Nick Fury is, you won't get the significance of Sir Nicholas Fury, the Queen's intelligence officer, for example.

I like comic books, but I totally agree that there are too many superhero movies out there. How about less X-men, and more Persepolis?

BO still has my vote

...but this FISA business has been discouraging to say the least. My only consolation is that my Senator (Dodd) is standing up for what's right. I think his speech earlier this week should be required reading for every American.

Hilarious

"It's disappointing to see commercialism creeping into what should be a very altruistic profession," said the director of the Center for Bioethics at Columbia University.

Having known a few doctors personally, and hearing horror stories about others, I have to say that ship sailed a long, long time ago!

If believers were more sophisticated then atheists would be less dogmatic

I'm not sure the reverse is true.

Not a problem at all

The biggest problem for evolutionists and one that is too often glossed over is the transition from non-life to life.

Actually, this isn't a problem at all, since evolution has nothing to do with the origin of life. The theory is only concerned with what happens when life replicates with inheritable characteristics.

As far as the peacock goes, I believe a lot has been written about why some birds have ridiculously overdeveloped features. It has to do with reproduction and female preference.

I would submit, student_on_the_rebound...

that your evaluation of your boyfriend's snide remark is in fact based on reason and evidence, and not on faith. Depending on how long you've been with him, you have a large body of experience with how he acts and what his personality is like, which you would refer to in evaluating future behavior. We have "faith" in strangers, because we don't know what they're like, but for the people we're close to we always use reason first.

People almost never take things on faith outside of religious convictions, but they never admit this.

But... that's reality

Science, by its very nature, is a series of unending questions.

As is life, if taken seriously. I'm sorry you prefer made-up "Truth" to the constant search for truth that makes up real life.

You also seem to have a lot invested in the bogeyman of The Angry Atheist.

Juno

And I hate the emphasis on "first weekend" attendance numbers, because it seems to emphasize loud things that go boom over quieter movies that build by word of mouth (do those exist any more?)

Juno was such a movie. While it was marketed extensively, it didn't explode out of the gate, but built up over time and stayed in theaters for a long time.

This is the rarity, however. Most movies don't have legs, and that might be saying something about our attention spans as well as the quality of current films.

I'm a guy, and I would totally see Mamma Mia if the babysitting schedule allowed for it. Alas, the wife will be seeing it solo, and I'll be catching Hellboy 2 the week before. ;)

What bothers me

The reason these banks gave mortgages to people who wouldn't afford them was because they make a pile of money off that. It doesn't appear (to me, at least) that the risk-takers who were reaping a windfall while the world burned will ever get their comeuppance.

Clearly

If people are naming their children Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii and 4Real (remember him?) New Zealand needs legislation to remedy the situation.

Yes, it's bad that the government is telling you how to name your children, but bizarre names such as the above almost amount to child abuse.

I don't mind adults giving themselves dumbass names (Optimus Prime, In God We Trust), but doing that to innocent children is just cruel.

Looking over that list, I didn't think Cinderella Beauty Blossom or Midnight Chardonay were that bad, but when people are naming there kids Number 16 Bus Shelter then someone needs to step in and make the call.

If I were a lesbian

I don't think I'd feel comfortable having an extremely religious Christian be compelled to help me with my fertility issues. I understand the antidescrimination angle, but I don't know that the plantiff actually won here.

@kufir77

I don't recall the commandment that says "Thou Shalt Not Provide Fertility Services to Gays".

Wait, what?

Obamabots conveniently forget, and the campaign is certainly not going to remind them, that Obama was born when his mother was barely eighteen.

Obama himself brought this up almost instantly when he said he'd fire anyone on his team who made this an issue.

The hypocrisy here is not that Palin is accepting of her daughter's state, the hypocrisy is that if the shoe were on the other foot, the Right would be howling about how "liberal secular values" lead to abominations such as pre-marital sex and unwed motherhood.

Original article: Attack on Iraq

McCain won

I watched it on C-SPAN2 to avoid any talking heads, and from my perspective McCain one.

Early on, neither of them were able to land any good hits in the economic questions, and when it got to Foreign Policy McCain hit his stride. Ironically, I think this may hurt his overall campaign once we see Palin face off against Biden. Her inexperience and unreadiness are even more stark when compared to McCain.

I also couldn't help but think how both of these guys make Bush look like an idiot.

Are we doomed?

I suppose the next step is to re-work the bailout, but with the European bank failures is it too late?

BS Excuse

The voters hate this thing. The Republicans want to be on the side of the public for this. They'll be hailed as heroes for resistance to this bill.
