can't win
[Read the article: Flying the child-unfriendly skies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Its funny because the same people who would tell this woman she is a bad mother because of her kids behaviour, would also probably tell her she was a bad mother because she decided to drug her kids!
Anyhow, I think that there needs to be more politeness on both sides of the fence. As a childless young woman, I can atest that I despise being on a long-haul flight with LOUD toddlers or kids kicking the back of my seat. It is not fun. However, when I see the parents are doing all they can to look after their children, I let it go. Afterall, they're kids. They're annoying. Its what they do. I assume the parents needed to travel. Speaking of, I think parents DO need to do all in their power to keep their kids undercontrol. I would never judge someone who gave their child pediatrician approved medication to get them to sleep on a long flight. Personally everytime I get on a flight longer than 5 hours I take Tylenol PM and knock myself out.
The flight this woman was on was NOT long-haul. It was what, 3 hours max? I think thats hardly anytime at all, and instead of being rude, the flight attendant should've been HELPFUL (good luck finding one of them on an American airline... they are all run by total incompetents who couldn't care less.) In fact, Continental could actually be the WORST of the lot (see recent headlines about a full plane forced to fly from Europe to the US with RAW SEWAGE leaking down the isles and no working toilet). I would never EVER fly them. With children or without.

fantastic interview
[Read the article: The Salon Interview: Elizabeth Edwards]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What a fantastic interview with a well-spoken, intelligent woman.
It is a shame that John Edwards isn't a black woman, because that's the only way he could possibly garner as much media attention as the Hillary/Obama circus. The MSM has lead us all to believe that the democratic nomination is a 2 horse race, which is a crying shame. Personally, I believe Edwards would make the best president of them all, but I have a lot of doubts that he will get the chance.
I was especially moved by what Elizabeth had to say regarding the 'you're a woman, and a feminist, so you MUST be voting for Hilary' kind of garbage. I will NOT be voting for Hilary. She absolutely grates upon me, and her stance on many issues strikes me as condescending. That is my opinion, and many will disagree. However, I feel like the people who want to vote for her just to see a woman in the top office are missing the point. You should vote for who you believe the best candidate is, who will represent you best. Just because we both share some X chromosomes doesn't mean ol Hil is going to represent me best.
It'd be nice to see Salon do a graphical comparison on what the democratic candidates takes are on some of the big poll issues. Gay marriage, abortion, and healthcare would be some... but so would income tax, censorship, copyright legislation, education, foregin policy, etc. I'd like to see a neutral source lay out a comparison of what their different approaches are to all the issues, not just the 'sexy' ones.

embarassed to be from CT
[Read the article: Joe Lieberman, from his indie perch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What can I say, other than Liberman makes me embarassed to be from CT the same way Bush makes me embarassed to be from the US. He certainally doesn't represent the average CT resident any more than our grand commander in cheif represents the average american.
I can only sit back and blame the blue blood republican-lite polo-with-pearls-wearing morons who must have voted for him. I also blame the lack of stateside media coverage about how he was different from Lamont. I think the majority of people who aren't Salon/Blog readers were left in a lot of confusion as to why Liberman was suddenly an independent, and why the CT Democratic party had (quite rightly) jettisoned him. Personally I view it as tricking long-time democrats into voting for him, when he does not represent the democrat ideology at all. It disgusts me that in the lead up to the election the local media in CT didn't see fit to expose him for what he is- a republican masquerading as a democrat.
His resembelence to Senator Palpatine of Star Wars fame is ironic and accurate. He'll stab the whole party in the back in order to get ahead personally. I'm definately bummed out that we're stuck with him for another 5 years.

shallow people
[Read the article: The artful seducer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Ah good, a book to teach shallow people to pick up other shallow people. Good luck with that.
Saying 'all women' want X in a man, and just don't know it' is a load of bollocks. Women are not some strange prehisotic creatures. They are people, and different people have different wants, needs and desires when it comes to choosing a partner. Not all men are attracted to the same qualities in women, and not all women are attracted to the same qualities in men.
This pseudo-pop-psyche mumbo jumbo about how men and women are 'hardwired' and can be manipulated based on that hardwiring is nonsense. And scratching the back of your hand? WTF is that all about?
This guy's whole schtick is based on showmanship, and yeah, he will attract the people who are attracted by shiny things. So, if youre the sort of person who wants to date the sort of person who falls for this crap, go for it I say. Let the shallow losers date other shallow losers, and the world will be happy.
Just keep out of MY reality.
