I might take you more seriously, Mr. Greenwald, if you were equally hard on Juan Williams, who spouts a predictable Left line on that same news show. Guess it doesn't count then, eh, Glenn?
I don't think Juan Williams is a news journalist. I think he's an opinion jouranlist, just as Mona said. You will find people like Mara Liasson on those panels who will never express a partisan opinion because they hold themselves out as news journalists and won't cross certain lines. But Brit Hume does not abide by those limits (nor, I would agree, does Juan Williams), which is why neither is or should be considered a news journalist. But Hume is considered that, and Fox holds him out as that.
Now, FAIR and the others are not exactly "everyone in the world," but then again I was speaking, as you know, hyperbolically.
No, you were speaking inaccurately. The fact that you, your like-minded friends and Media Matters realizes what Hume is does not mean that "the whole world does" or - more to your point - that there is no point in documenting Hume's ongoing inaccuracies. As the post demonstrates, many mainstream media figures (Mark Halperin, Howard Kurtz, Charles Gibson) speak of Hume as a respectable and objective journalist. His status as a moderator for the Democratic presidential debate further demonstrates that.
So the fact that you, your friends a couple of liberal website say bad things about Brit Hume hardly means that his inaccuracies should not longer be documented. In fact, that is precisely why Media Matters has 170 entries about him, rather than just one.
However, I think he should be given a pass on this one. He's at least making a nod toward acknowleding a reality outside of the right-wing ideological fantasyland, the real world where BushCo's policies actually have a real cost to real people. Isn't this a good first step?
I see your point, and it is true that Jonah is the only war-loving blogger (at least that I've seen) who has even mentioned this story, so a point to him for that, as you suggest.
But I probably wouldn't have written about this had it not been for Jonah's juxtaposing Dana Priest and Geraldo Rivera by suggesting that the latter needs to confirm what the former has reported. Maybe I'm a bit biased in this matter - since I really, really like not only Dana Priest's reporting but also her understanding of journalism and how she articulates it (read that Frontline interview) -- but it was that comparison, combined with the subtle attack on her trustworthiness, which made me write about this (and the original post was lighter and emphasized the absurdist comparison made by Jonah; it only enlarged into a more serious topic once Jonah compounded the flaws in his commentary by commenting further).
Glenn's New Book
I preordered. Have you?
Is it a good time, or should we wait to make more of an impact?
I really appreciate the comment and the sentiment, but it'd be better if everyone waited to order the book from Amazon. As Susan suggested, the ordering will have more of an impact if done in a coordinated way closer to the book's June release date. I will obviously post more as the date approaches. Thanks.
Par. 3 (non-quotes), about line 3. Beltway pundits, not pundtis.
I genuinely always appreciate corrections of all kinds to the post. It's one of the things I like most about blogging -- errors have a very, very short life-span.
But for those who haven't heard this before: my method of posting is that I post what I write before fully editing it. For whatever reasons, I just can't really catch all of the typos and other small phrasing defects that need cleaning up until the post is actually posted. As a result, there is always a period of 3-5 minutes after I post when the post is usually plagued by various typos and the like.
So if you're one of the first commenters and you see typos, that is likely why. Waiting a few minutes will usually result in most of them being fixed. If they remain after that initial period, please correct away.
Glenn's book is available at amazon time to put it on top over there. Preorder today, and we won't have to pay until June.
