If a woman gets raped, her family can kill her because she's brought shame unto them BUT that same family can use a child as a human table and still be allowed to walk the streets with no shame themselves. And we're putting out billions of dollars a day and thousands of American lives at risk to keep these people "free"? What really enrages me is the fact that our government uses the women and children/human rights argument to justify having troops in Afghanistan but our forces on the ground aren't allowed to do anything to stop these abuses. It's a different culture than ours, they're told, and we must respect that. What a load of crap.
I know it would never happen but I'd feel a lot better about paying taxes if the money was being spent on airlifting every woman and child out of that mess. Just another day I thank my lucky stars that I was born a girl in America. Our country has problems, no doubt, but any adult who abuses a child the way Gulsoma was abused would be spending decades in prison.
New Zealand can control the flow of immigrants because it's surrounded by water - nobody can just walk across the border into their country. And like Australia, New Zealand is VERY leery of issuing papers to anyone who isn't white, fearing that each brown immigrant allowed into the country is going to bring a large family with them.
I find it hard to be mad at immigrants - most of them moved here because they were tired of being broke and are busitng their asses to make their lives better. My anger is directed towards Mexican President Vicente Fox and other Central American heads of state. Those countries are poor due to decades, even centuries, of corruption that has placed 99% of the country's wealth into the hands of the remaining 1%. America has become their safety valve - every person who moves here is one less person the home country has to feed or worry about agitating for a regime change. As a bonus, many foreign workers in the US are sending money to their families back home - as much as $20 billion a year is sent into Mexico alone. There's no incentive to implement reforms that would make Mexico and other countries into places that their citizens don't want to leave. As long as this situation persists, immigrants will continue to come to America.
I was a student at UC Davis when the Naked Guy was going to Cal; our newspaper, the California Aggie, wrote an editorial supporting him and suggesting that he transfer to UCD rather than stay in Berkeley and submit to The Man and his oppressive modesty. It seems to me that a lot of people - especially us women - pay lip service to the idea of body acceptance but privately wish we looked "better", whatever that means. Andrew Martinez really believed that the body was beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of and he didn't just talk the talk - he literally walked the walk, all over Berkeley. A simple but very revolutionary idea.
I'm so sorry to hear that he's gone. Rest in peace, man.
In order for Madonna to survive two hours of complex choreography that includes jumping, rolling around on the stage, and working a stripper pole/horse saddle - all done while singing - she NEEDS to be in shape. She put on a great show and looked amazing, the perfect combination of form and function.
Madonna realized a long time ago that since she doesn't have natural talent, she would have to just work harder than everyone else to stay on top. And that's exactly what she does. I hope Britney Spears is taking notes.
I don't think it's intentional - L.A. has a huge Latino population and a lot of integrated communities so no matter where you go, you're going to see a diverse mix of people. But the low-rise jeans topic has been discussed numerous times on this site - the LA Times is just now noticing the muffin tops?
It breaks my heart when I go to the mall and see teenage girls squeezing into clothes that don't flatter them just so they can try to fit in - you couldn't pay me to be a teenager again.
check out the SI photo gallery of 49er Tony Parrish doing yoga poses he used to rehab his broken leg last year. Wow.
In defense of Natalie Gulbis, she's a local girl from the Sacramento area and seems like a pretty good person. I don't really have a problem with the photos, except to say they're lame because they're so staged. Yes, she cashes in on her looks but unlike women like Anna Kournikova, Natalie plays her sport at a high level - she doesn't win a ton of tournaments but she's almost always in contention on Sunday. She finished 6th last year on the LPGA's money list with over a million dollars in tournament winnings - money she earned playing golf, not modeling. Good luck to her.
That might be the most savage backhanded compliment I've ever seen. My face is stinging. Which is worse - the idea that the actresses mentioned in the article are "fat" at a size 6 or 8 OR the pig photo and its none-too-subltle message that women are pieces of meat, available for consumption? I think I'll vote for the photo. I like men but knowing there are guys out there who think this way about women really kills my interest in dating.
