Time to wake up?
[Read the article: Intelligent designer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]When I was young, I watched Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn go at each other in the movie Adam's Rib, a re-enactment of the 1925 Scopes trial. The movie was funny but the events it portrayed were troubling. Yet I felt a sense of safety, almost relief, in the large gap of time between now and the 1920s. It was comforting to think that, certainly, we're beyond that now.
I could not have been more wrong. The I.D. issue is only the tip, but it is symbolic of what is happening in this country as a whole. Much of the progress made over the years is very close to being eliminated, and will be, if we don't do something.
But why is it that no one seems capable of rallying a response? In the case of I.D., where is the scientific community? Why aren't they on the news talking about how I.D. is simply not science? It seems so obvious and it's really not difficult to explain in a straightforward manner. But the silence is deafening all over: Where are the so called progressives? Are they defending our soon to be extinct progressive tax system? Do they believe that people should pay taxes according to their ability or not? Today a millionaire investment banker pays a lower tax rate than his secretary, yet where's the anger? And the list goes on and on: tens of millions have no access to healthcare, the U.S. is addicted to oil and we're doing absolutely nothing about it, and we've created a world where it's OK to invade other countries if you think they might do something to harm you someday but have no actual proof to back it up. If anyone thinks Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are going to put up a good fight for what is right, dream on. So who then?

What Did Tucker Carlson Say?
[Read the article: The right take on Libby?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How in the world could Tucker Carlson possibly know whether outing Valerie Plame was harmful to national security?! Does he have top secret security clearances? I doubt it.
At this point, it doesn't make any difference anyway. Libby's account of his conversations with government officials and reporters regarding Valerie Wilson's identity are almost completely different, chronologically and substantively, from what actually happened. If the indictment is read carefully, it is obvious there is practically no way he could have just 'not remembered correctly.'

Pick your battles
[Read the article: A Scalia by any other name]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Democrats should pick their battles carefully. Judicial nominations should only be vigorously opposed when the nominee is an extremist. Alito is not an extremist. He is smart and definitely conservative, but he's not a zealot.
It really comes down to this: if Democrats want to control who's on the Supreme Court, they need to win elections, and they are not. Instead of endlessly protesting and complaining, the Dems need to take a long hard look at themselves and figure out why they are not in power and why the Republicans are in power. Things will not change for Democrats until they do some serious self-examination. They need to figure out who they are, what they believe in, where they want to take the country - and then lead.

Bad Advice
[Read the article: I'm in love with my co-worker]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My goodness, I've never seen so much bad relationship advice. Let's see, you LOVE your wife deeply, wouldn't do anything to hurt her, don't want to leave her, but then decide to indulge (and given the above, it IS mere indulgence) in fantasies about what-ifs, or tell your wife how in love you are with another woman (gosh, THAT wouldn't hurt her!), and otherwise stoke what seems to quickly be turning into an affair - emotional affairs are also affairs.
If you're serious about staying with your wife, you love her and don't want to hurt her, LET IT GO. A little letting go is a good thing.
And regarding the "be honest and tell your wife" argument: Being honest with someone does not require one to be completely and ruthlessly honest in every single matter that comes between you, especially when the so-called honesty will most likely hurt the other person FOR NO GOOD REASON (you do want to stay with your wife, no?)

Refreshing
[Read the article: Fear of spying]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's actually refreshing to read the posts to this article. So much anger and eloquence. And it's about time because any change in the Democratic party is NOT going to come from its current leadership, it's going to come from US.
So what to do? Run for office, or help those that you believe in run for office. Get involved. Would someone like to help me challenge Nancy Pelosi here in San Francisco? (The Dems would be much better off w/o her.)

Slow learners
[Read the article: The filibuster fiasco]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A filibuster strategy should have been in the works long ago, and when the Republicans responded by threatening to use the nuclear option, the answer should have been: Please do.
I would have called their bluff. Democrats would have stood for something in an organized way, Republicans could have been portrayed as power-hungry bullies, and eventually the Dems would have controlled the Senate with a "no judicial filibuster" rule. (That is a party goal, right, to win back the Senate?) Alito would have been confirmed anyway, but ultimately if one wants a say in who sits on the Supreme Court, it's either through the Presidency or the Senate, and the Dems control neither.
Who's running the Democratic party anyway? Is there a group of party leaders working to build consensus and plotting a strategy to win? It sure doesn't seem like it. Hello? Anyone...? The lights are on, but nobody's home...

This Review Is...
[Read the article: Too great to be good]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...just trying to be controversial. It's all about Miss Z's career. But I must say, she did successfully construct, using words, an 'argument' as to why someone might not like his performance. It's just that when you stand back and look at the argument as a whole, it's ridiculous.
