The value of human life.....
[Read the article: Face of a psychopath]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Shooter:
but I can say that in the great scheme of things the Israelis are a lot more valuable to our country
Turgidson:
Mr. President, we are rapidly approaching a moment of truth both for ourselves as human beings and for the life of our nation. Now, the truth is not always a pleasant thing, but it is necessary now make a choice, to choose between two admittedly regrettable, but nevertheless, distinguishable post-war environments: one where you got twenty million people killed, and the other where you got a hundred and fifty million people killed.
Muffley:
You're talking about mass murder, General, not war.
Turgidson:
Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say... no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh... depended on the breaks.
Muffley:
I will not go down in history as the greatest mass murderer since Adolph Hitler!
Turgidson:
Perhaps it might be better, Mr. President, if you were more concerned with the American people, than with your image in the history books.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]You're being WAY too kind to the troll who's afraid to identify himself but is nevertheless instantly recocnizable with every post. He clearly has no clue whatsoever about what being an American is but thinks it somehow different from being a Muslim. I personally think it's inapproprate to allow him to co-opt the word because the last time I checked, the loyalty we Americans share is to the Constitution of the United States including its promise of freedom of religion and equal protection to all under the law.
But being an Unamerican Traitor who probably hasn't even read the Constitution, he wouldn't understand details such as that.
He should be ignored until he slinks back to LGF where he belongs.

unless huge mobs of iliterate Muslim savages are mindreaders
[Read the article: Face of a psychopath]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I still don't know why anyone is giving this guy the time of day. He is clearly a racist idiot who refers to "Americans" as if the term only included people in lockstep with his own prejudices and hatred. He has routinely told absolute lies (and nothing but lies) about the positions taken by the other commenters here or "liberals" in general. He's incapable of differentiating anyone who lives in the Middle East and is calling for the death of tens of thousands without a hint of remorse.
And yet people are conversing with him as if he saw any purpose in the exchange other than another opportunity to fling a Jr High school level insult.
I didn't realize that healthysphincter had managed to lower the bar quite that far.

Norman Podhoretz compared with Osama bin Laden
[Read the article: Face of a psychopath]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Fascinating comparison...There is however one important difference between the two. OBL has actually seen action.

My latest slogan
[Read the article: Notes on "A Tragic Legacy"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Seems appropriate to this thread....
Religion is simply politics seasoned with the extra confidence that comes from thinking that the Creator of the Universe has your back.
I'd also like to add a note on framing, leftover from the previous thread, but also pertinent to item 2. We should NEVER let RWA's co-opt the word American and allow people who challenge militarism be accused of being anti-American. Being pro-American means fealty to the Constitution of the United States including the Bill Of Rights and the Equal Protection clause. (and article 1 giving Congress the war-making powers) Anybody willing to surrender those values deserves the anti-American label and it needs to be reiterated at every opportunity.
The anti-American label is a powerful weapon and WE should be the ones who are weilding it.

A little BF Skinner would be useful here.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Speculations about GWB's inner state may be entertaining but his overt behavior is quite sufficient to cause extreme alarm.
Anyone familiar with the 12-Step philosophy knows that the whole process of recovery involves careful examination of your faults and taking positive steps for making amends for your wrongs. This would suggest that GWB doesn't know recovery from shinola.

I sometimes find it useful
[Read the article: Krauthammer's plan to deny Palestinians gas and electricity]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]To remind myself that we humans are in fact a just bunch of apes with a modicum of extra neural circutry that allows us to communicate more effectively. The core forces that drive our behavior remain the same ones that drive chimps to gather in bands and sort themselves by rank.
I need to remind myself of that because otherwise the part of me that thinks rationally and believes that "all men (and women) are created equal" just gets overwhelmed with the galling cruelty and stupidity that permeates our existence.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]There is no such thing as a "loss of control phenomenon" whenever an alcoholic drinks.
While I may agree that people in recovery who are afraid to use mouthwash because of the alcohol involved may take the idea to far, the idea that there isn't a tipping point past which someone who's drinking is no longer capable of deciding whether his next one is a good idea or not is quite daft.
Note that I'm tempted to use a stronger word than daft, but I'm presuming you mean no actual harm.

Shooter makes sense until he gets to the BIG lie...
[Read the article: Krauthammer's plan to deny Palestinians gas and electricity]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]what I've seen, the majority here would be in favor of continued bombing of American cities
You'd get a lot further with your arguments if you didn't spew crap like this. Being against cutting off food and power is not to be in favor of bombing. You're not so stupid as to not realize that. You are therefore a liar.
Imagine my surprise.

It's helpful only insofar
[Read the article: Notes on "A Tragic Legacy"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]characteristic of a dry drunk advances our understanding, or our ability to survive the consequences of his actions.
as it allows people to consider that someone could REALLY be that immune to critisicm and that wedded to a course of action which has clearly resulted in an ongoing tragedy of epic proportions. If referring to GWB as a dry-drunk helps people get their heads around his otherwise inexplicable stubborness then I would assert that it does indeed advance our understanding.
