  • Wow.....

I could go at length pointing to the falsehoods in DT's post but it's clear that the core problem is that he doesn't understand what is meant by "the country".

He's clearly not alone. Rather than proceed point by point, I'll simply remind him that what is unique about our Country is the fact that goverment exists in service of the people, not the other way around.

It was a radical idea at the time it was introduced, and current history reminds us that it is a fragile idea.

To write off genuine love of our country as expressed in defense of our liberties as hatred of a particular figurehead is to turn reality on its head. I can only mourn that someones vision is so shallow that they can fail to understand the freedom they've been granted.

    oh well....

If you think Neocons are our biggest threat, what part of MUSLIMS don't you understand??

Of course since apparently the biggest threat facing us is MUSLIMS I guess our only propeer non-treasonous course of action is to declare war on 25% of the planet including the 6 million or so living here in America.

    I feel safer already.....

    DT:

    If you honestly beleive this:

Islam on the other hand, is an ideology of death and hate that hundreds of millions are born and raised with<>/i>

Then there really is no hope. The only way to satisfy you would be destroying a large fraction of the planet. The fact that your own hatred directly mirrors what you accuse your enemies of is completely lost to you. Fortunatly for the rest of us, the world isn't really like that. It's populated with a wide variety of people, some of whom like the idea of warfare and some of whom just want to be left alone to raise their families and live their lives.

Who belongs to which group is quite independent of religion and nationality.

  • Would ity be a waste of time?

To point out the exitstence of the Jefferson bible. That he rewrote the new testament removing all references to miraculous events would tend to say a lot about his religious beliefs. I'm confident that DT would be disappointed.

And I might add that Christianity was quite tolerated in Iraq until we invaded!

I suggest that once someone has shown themselves to be too steeped in a distorted worldview to talk to rationally, that the attempt no longer be made.

  • The funny thing is, I'm not the one who didn't assimilate

Considering your appalling ignorance of our nation's History, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, I'd say your assimilation is quite a ways off yet.

DT reminds me of anonymoose in the extremity of his viewpoint, but he's much better at stringing actual thoughts together.

And MC Cool as daletrocks. Quite plausable....

  • Basic assumptions

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The premise of your piece is that the function of the media is to act a watchdog and to expose and prevent "official" wrongdoing. It is after all, what we were taught to believe and it is of course why we were told the first amendment is such an important part of our American heritage.

Unfortunately, as businesses, the function of media is simply to generate the greatest amount of revenue while incurring the least amount of expenses. Investigations consume resources and pissing off the administration has measurable costs as well. It is unsurprising then that the opportunity to fill column inches with certified non-boat-rocking official approved news would be quite tempting.

Since its simple economics that drives the trend, the best counter also requires simple economics. (Sadly, in order for Glenn to point out shoddy reporting, it IS necessary to read the paper.) But the bottom line (get it?) remains that if we don't like the way a source reports the news, then we should vote with our eyeballs and go elsewhere to get our news. We should also encourage those we know to do the same thing.

  • Newspapers...

I didn't intend to suggest that newpapers ONLY exist to generate wads of cash. If that were the case after all, they'd sell their interest in the paper and put it all into video gambling. The problem as I see it is that as corporations get larger and involved in more diverse activities, then decisions tend to be made more at the level of excel worksheets and less at actual activity and consequences.

I disagree that public funding (ala PBS, NPR ) is an appropriate answer but I do agree that strong anti-trust rules have been in the past and could be aagin a proper remedy for what ails the MSM.

  • Welcome to reality....

And you will be at war with Iran long before you stop your hand-wringing over whether the "free" press is fulfilling its function.

What then are you suggesting we do INSTEAD of hand wringing?

I appreciate your response. I have on occasion seen people express the idea that what we do in forums such as this is inadequate but when pressed for alteranatives, the reponses range from immediate impeachment to armed rebellion.

Its an issue that especially resonates with me as a USVI resident in that I have no representation in Congess save a non-voting delegate and no say whatsoever in the Senate or Presidential races.

Some people apparently need to have the numerous times that professional journalist have been condescending or downright nasty to bloggers or have the etymology of the phrases "dirty f##king hippies" or "unwashed masses" explained to them or for that matter the source of the phrase "blogger ethics panel" revealkd before they will inderstand why Glenn's post is news.

I suddenly feel like an old-timer!
