  • Wow...

I hadn't yet formed an opinion on how bad a Giuliani presidency would be, but if Mona says this:

in all sincerity, I'd prefer any of the rest in the GOP field, no matter how much they hate gays or even if they'd make creationism the official position of the American government.

Then I know to be very afraid!

    Thanks for the input...

  • What about this comment by Ufansius?

Provocative and interesting, but I think it oversimplifies things. There is some truth to the theory that a rising tide lifts all boats. The best way to maintain American prosperity isn't by keeping others in poverty but rather making sure they have exactly enough to participate in the consumer society. A TV in every living room and Cola and Beer available at every corner store. Now THATS the American ideal.

mistakes Richard Lowry for a partisan critic.

So exactly when DID we stop teaching the Constitution in school?

I know I sure miss it.

  • I wasn't suggesting

[Read the article: Still more extraordinary anti-democracy comments from Giuliani]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

That the worlds economy was all sweetness and light. I was merely suggesting that this:

the American lifestyle, while tremendously enjoyable for us, is only possible if we hold down the standard of living for the rest of the world with the iron fist of military might.

    is misguided.

We don't use our military might to hold down people's standard of living. We just use it to keep them on-program.

  • And let us not forget...

[Read the article: Still more extraordinary anti-democracy comments from Giuliani]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

that the US military is a HUGE component of our economy in the first place enriching the likes of GE, Lockheed, Raytheon and countless others and keeping thousands (millions?) of hungry young men out of the wider labor market.

But with the magic of creative lending, purchasing power remains unaffected!

  • Two different assertions

[Read the article: ABC News' bizarre "scoop" on Iran's nuclear program]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    One sourced, the other not.

The date 2009 came from David Albright. I haven't dug past his bio but he does appear to be an expert in the field. The existence and location of the centrifuges are attributed to "sources familiar with the dramatic upgrade" but Albright is quoted extensively including this:

I think we have all been caught off guard. Ahmadinejad said they would have these 3,000 installed by the end of May, and it appears they may actually do it," Albright said.

As much as I hate the war-cheerleading process, I am afraid that you might be overreaching on this one. Unless of course Mr. Albright is a typical neocon in which case - have at it.

  • Link to one of their sources.

I'll leave it to others to determine if this guy's got an agenda or not.....

  • Who're you going to call?

[Read the article: ABC News' bizarre "scoop" on Iran's nuclear program]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Albright isn't the source for the claims about Iranian nuclear activity

I agree, which is why I noted that the article had two different assertions. I was just digging into Albright and he pretty much appears to be the go-to guy when an expert opinion is needed on such things.

This article dated March 10, 2003:

    http://www.isis-online.org/publications/iraq/al_tubes.html

hems and haws a bit but generally discredits the administration's aluminum-tube assertions just prior to the invasion.

The first sentence of the conclusion:

Perhaps we will eventually learn that Iraq actually planned to hide a centrifuge purchase in a rocket procurement program. Such cleverness is well within Iraqi capabilities, although Iraq rarely chooses to build a poor product when it can build the same item significantly better in less time. Such a revelation, however, will not vindicate the CIA analysis, which is viewed as atrocious and deceptive by many experts on centrifuges and Iraqi rockets

Note the degree of vacilation even when he's calling bullshit.

    Fascinating!

  • The cry-wolf effect....

[Read the article: ABC News' bizarre "scoop" on Iran's nuclear program]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I find this especially ironic. Lets assume for the sake of argument that the source for the ABC story is a CIA insider who has access to the intelligence and that the Iranians indeed are only 2 years away from a bomb. The administration has so poisoned our discourse that a significant fraction of us wouldn't beleive a single word of it. Trolls come in here and make blanket statements about "the left" and try to discredit the discussion that take place here and alsewhere but the fact that the world really IS a dangerous place is why its particularly important that we, as citizens are fully and properly informed about what is happening so that we can make informed choices. Otherwise we'll liable to something really stupid....again!

"like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime."

He of course is referring to an outdoor market in downtown Gary in the mid '80s.

As this link clearly shows, there will be 124 Art and Craft Fairs in Indiana between now and 12/31/07. I also have reason to believe that a car will backfire near one of them causing several people to startle.

So you can clearly see, that the comparison is quite apt. The only difference is the body-count!

  • Has anyone noticed?

The gap between what's being said and reality on the ground has now widened to the point that even our resident trolls can't deny it. All they have left is the functional equivalent of "well Democrats lie too!" Which is even more ironic when you realize that that brings them into complete agreement with a significant portion of the people who posrt here.

  • But then again....

This kind of delusion would be unnecessary if he weren't a member of Congress.

I wonder if this refusal to speak to or otherwise engage our purported enemy is simply a refusal to allow for the possibility that they aren't the devil incarnate and in fact are rational actors with their own self interest at heart. After all, recognizing someone's humanity is a prerequisite for negotiation. As such it would represent a failure of the demonization process.

And we all know that our friends at GE and Raytheon (not to mention Disney) have a rather sizable stake in the demonization process.
