Lies, Damn Lies and Hold the Statistics
[Read the article: The case of the disappearing benchmarks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Who is shocked that all the President's little lies add up to big lies? By now, even this most feeble, gutless, feckless and pathetic Congress, swept into office with ONE CLEAR MANDATE, should be able to recognize that the Boy King is lying - because his lips are moving!
As a Democrat, my concern about being described as soft on security was tempered by my sense of responsibility to personal liberties and individual rights - you know, the Constitution. What's the point of a victory over an enemy from which we have become indistinguishable?
This Congress isn't soft on defense and security, it's shapeless, spineless and amoebic - absorbing every attack against our Constitution by this White House and converting it into a jellied amalgam of paralysis and empty rhetoric. Of course the Congress has lower ratings than those of the worst American President ever. He at least has a pulse.
Bush, with his recklessness of action without reflection, has done everything he can that to destroy the Republican Party. Now the Congress follows suit with a stultifying inertia guaranteed to kill the reasoned activism that has always defined the best contributions of the Democratic Party.
Perhaps we are growing and evolving to a NO-party system of representation. Right now, I’m having a hard time finding any “down” side to that prospect.

Me Love You Long Time GI
[Read the article: Don't believe the surge hype]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Petraeus has been carrying water for Bush for so long in Iraq, that he probably couldn't tell the truth if he knew it or actually wished to divulge it. Maybe it's just that the bearings on this Senior Officer’s moral and intellectual compass were overwhelmed by the heady, ego-driven magnetism within the NeoCons' world building fantasies. The problem with this gentle, best-case hypothesis is that IT'S THE WORST POSSIBLE THING THAT CAN HAPPEN!
Hey General, do you suppose those >175,000< weapons that were lost ON YOUR WATCH, are hiding with the famous missing WMDs. Some of us still remember the 1st big lie about the weapons - the ones nobody has mentioned, looked for, or accidentally stumbled upon since the day Congress wrote the 1st check for your ascension to political fame and military disgrace.
All the real Generals are gone - the ones who were soldiers, not politicians - the ones who could and would distinguish and speak of military truths when they differed from the party line. Mr. Petraeus, you're a fraud. Resign, come home, run for office and shoot your mouth off about what you're WILLING TO DO in the appropriate forum for politicians. Leave the war to the warriors, and let the President fall on the political sword of this ignominious and catastrophic failure. It's not your sword any more so than are the Brigades of which you preposterously claim ownership!
Shame on you.

War of Words
[Read the article: One-sided rules of political debate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thanks to Mr. Greenwald for yet another penetrating and yes, discomforting article. It’s a rare voice these days that can inject both rigor and meaning into the discourse about our current government. I have to admit that lately I’ve been leaning toward “Send in the Clowns”.
Way back when - there was another rhyming General under attack by an anti-war movement (vs. anti war crowd). Remember General Waste More Land, a man who took “scorched earth” to places the Sherman, in his grave, can only dream about. That meager linguistic spitball provoked no interest because there was REAL PROTEST GOING ON IN THE STREETS - the 60's version of "stick and stones.....but words will never hurt me”.
Now all the right wing war profiteers have to do is wait around while the "liberals" periodically summon just enough courage to raise their voices while DOING NOTHING! As we can see from the Congressional failure and collapse from January through today, the left tires very quickly. It must, never having recovered the moral musculature still atrophied from disuse during the "me generation". A 200,000 member "blog" will NEVER look like 200,000 people marching to Washington. The difference between dissent and protest is the same as buying TV time or capturing it! How soon we forget.
The only requirement for this criminal Administration to increase it's stranglehold on the throat of democracy is to pause every now and again, look down at the prone corpse of real political ACTION and PROTEST, and just give the body (in this case, MoveOn) a couple of good kicks to make sure it stays dead.

WOLF WHO?
[Read the article: Republican leader: Iraq is a "small price" to pay]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I remember the last time Wolf Blitzer wound up being interviewed by John Boehner. It was disgusting. Boehner went on virtually uninterrupted except for a couple of Wolf's fawning, nerf-ball questions and subordinate silences almost longer the war itself. If Blitzer could not claim an "exclusive" or "first" interview by his "team, the best on TV", he would have absolutely nothing to say. Does ANYONE take him or his interviews seriously? He's no more than a clumsy cheerleader wearing any uniform that fits that day.
