Amateurish Journalism

This article is the classic "writer trying to gain attention through shock value" journalism. It's amateur at best, and more specifically, it's utter B.S. Don't worry folks, there is no "depression" coming. And if anything, it's articles like this one that are fueling the current fears of a "recession." Recessions and depressions are not caused by mysterious, "evil financial forces." They're caused simply by fear. For example, if I'm a major investor in stocks and the media tells me a recession is coming, I sell my stocks. Once me and several others start dumpig stocks, then everyone else follows like lemmings and dumps their stocks. This causes a downward spiral, fueled by fear, fueled by the media. Once stock markets go down, employers start tightening their belts and laying people off. People who are laid off then have less purchasing power. And the companies that laid them off in the first place, then have fewer customers. More layoffs, less buyers, more layoffs, it keeps going down. Recessions are caused by "each man trying to save himself," which causes us all to lose.

If the media told us today that the "recession is over," I guarantee it would actually be over. It's a self-fulfilling profecy. People would think, "Oh gee, now I can afford to buy stuff again," causing sellers to reap profits again, causing them to hire more employees. See the trend? Same would happen in the stock markets.

Folks, we are like lemmings. And we will all run and jump off whatever cliff the media tells us to. So if we are in a recession, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Oh yes, and a bunch of attention-seeking journalists.

Depression my rear-end.

I just read this article a second time and it's just amazing how totally clueless its writer is. He doesn't even understand the basic economic tenent that "Tightening the belt" is a cause of recession, not an effect. He's basically trying to scare us all into tightening our belts, therefore actually fulfilling the profecy of recession/depression.

Then, at one point in the articles, he even mentions that "we are not even technically in a recession." Um... so are we heading into another great depression? Or are we not even in a recession?" What's this guy smoking?

Folks, don't believe the journalistic hype. There's no depression looming. We're nowhere even close. The mere notion of it is retarded.

To: Reality-based liberal

Recessions aren't cured by a country's ability to produce something the rest of the world needs. They are cured by a PERCEPTION of value. Economies are like any commodity. Gold is a perfect example. Gold has no intrinsic value or benefit. But it has a PERCEIVED value. Humans have collectively agreed that gold is worth money. The more we believe it, the higher the price of gold. The less we believe it, the lower the price goes. If we all woke up tomorrow morning and collectively decided that there is no recession, there would no longer be a recession. But no one is willing to be the first to stick his neck out and spend money, hire an employee, buy a stock, etc. We're all hanging onto our pennies, waiting to see what everyone else will do. It's human nature. We all into self-preservation at the expense of the larger group.

It's the same reason concentration camp victims remained captive. In Auschwitz, the prisoners outnumbered the guards 500 to 1. Obviously, it they would have all rushed the guards together, they could have easily destroyed the camp. But that would mean that the first few pto rush the guards would probably be shot and killed, even though the rest of the group would win. So each prisoner, as an individual, didn't want to be the first to risk anything. So they all sat around, waiting, hoping, waiting to see what would happen – and taking measures to try and protect ourselves over others. In a sense, that's what we're all doing now, in this so-called "recession."

A recession isn't something that "happens" as much as it's something we "do."

To Lynx

Why do you think those who believe there won't be a depression are republican? I'm a flaming liberal. But I won't take a position on an issue merely to make the republican administration look bad. Regardless of your party, you should think about the issue, not what you think your party expects you to believe. I don't know or care what Rush Limbaugh thinks. This isn't about partisan politics. This is about economics 101. Read the book and you'll understand the true causes of recession.

hey bernbart

Hey Bernbart, what do you do for a living? Whatever it is, you rely on customers for your income right? What if, in the name of saving money, we all stopped buying your product or service? Is that the solution you're proposing?

I can't help but ask, are you joking? No, seriously, are you trying to be funny? I think your post must just me a hoax, right? Or are you purposely trying to undermine the ecomony? Or are you just hopelessly clueless? Wow.
