Thanks Joan for your sanity. It makes me so mad when Joe won't let you complete a thought. He always raises the volume before he hears you out. It reminds me of a kid putting his fingers in his ears when you say something he does not want to hear. What bothers me about so much of the discussion on this topic is white guys taking great offense at something Sharpton or Jesse Jackson has said way in the past, they refuse to stay on the topic at hand. They sound like spoiled babies who can't admit that just by being born white males they have advantages over everyone else on earth. The other thing is the slipperiness of all the pundits who have been part of the "club" they know that they have condoned all the ugly behavior on Imus's show by their eager appearences there and I don't see evidence that any of them are reflecting on that. They just want to defend their buddy.I have lost respect for several who I rather liked before.
Thanks you Mr. Greenwald for summing it up for us. The Politico is a fine example of what I consider adolescent thinking.I don't know how they sleep at night. If it was not for reporting found on the web on excellent sites like TPM.com and books written by individuals interested in serious topics ,important to the American people, we would be ignorant and uninformed.All one needs to do is look at the quality of their comments to see the continuation of adolescent dialogue. I read your column daily to reassure myself that there are adult minds still making commentary.
One of the things Glen's post points out is the acceptance of corporate media versus the type of journalism that Halberstam was known for, by many in influential positions. I was watching a local St. Louis show called Donneybrook, on PBS just hours ago. This show is a round table of local media: radio hosts, newspaper columnists and editors.The subject was a local controversy over the leader of St. Louis University taking away the editoral rights of the University's student newspaper, produced out of it's school of journalism. He did not like the fact that the paper had produced some peices that embarassed the University, i.e. a piece on the number of rapes on campus. One of the radio hosts thought it was perfectly alright," after all ", he said, "these students have to learn that when they get out into the world that they will be representing the interests of their employers" He was rebutted thankfully by the editor of the local African American Newspaper who said, "if he does that he should just close down the school of journalism because that is not what they are teaching their students." I was struck by the easy acceptance of the radio guy that this was the way things were.
I always hate getting on this late because it seems that the conversation at some point takes on a life of its own and I want to be back on the topic. I appreciate your writing so much because you always give voice to my fustrations. I want to respond to the writer who said " Where did this start?" If you think back to the time when there was a good oppositional press it was during Watergate. The two journalists most remembered from that time are Woodword an Bernstein. Just think of what they have become. Woodward joined the establishment and Berstein had a meltdown. Now he is back with a Clinton hating book in a vulgar attempt to make money.I think Woodword needs to be asked some serious questions about things he knew and held back from the public so he could cash in on a tell all book. These guys still get respect.

I have always said that W took after the mean spirited Babs rather than the somewhat tenderhearted GHWB.I sometimes wonder if his whole adminstration is just family dynamics writ large. I think Bush senior looks hagard, he must be losing sleep over what the "black sheep" is doing to the country.The son has certainly repudiated his Father's foreign policy.

This is off topic and that annoys me but I just wanted to let you know that I have made three posts on Politico over the last several days and referenced your piece about their connections to the Republican Party. They are polite posts not vulgar rants and they never get posted. I have had other topics posted but not that one, and I have not read any other references to your work on their site.TPM got a refrerence today and I was shocked.

Darn! I missed you on Scarborough. I agree, that this group of moderates that supposedly really gave it to the president, what a sham. They just want cover at home, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was cooked up by the White House.It really shows the craveness of Tim Russert and his willingness to play along.Anyway, when people talk of political progress in the Iraq Parliment no one explores the terms of the oil bill and why it has been so hard to pass. Could it be that the Iraqs don't see the advantages for their people, could it be that the advantages go instead to the oil companies?
