[Read the article: My husband has Chinese ancestry but his son wants to keep it secret]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

i suspect that LW is mistaking "chinese ancestry" for what is, in truth, sharing remote common ancestors with millions of people who are now accounted "chinese"-- in other words, her husband's more recent ancestors could be native americans.

  • i'm white & i'm offended

[Read the article: Is Oprah the new Imus?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

would oprah have made this comment addressing a mostly white gathering? i don't think so...

  • the big question is

[Read the article: "I'm so tired of America"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    can you dance to it?

  • illegal immigrants

[Read the article: The other mothers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

in my community "nannies" wouldn't exist(except for the ultra-wealthy) without a rich pool of illegal immigrants waiting to be exploited. there are a lot of lazy mayzie birds of all political stripes out there who don't mind overlooking the law when it benefits them.

  • response

[Read the article: Beyond the Multiplex]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." (I Corinthians ch. XIII, v. 11)"

uh, i really don't think paul was discussing abortion here. and what in this passage justifies striking a child?

good film review. if it ever plays this burg i'll see it.

  • well

[Read the article: Giuliani's loyalty to an accused priest]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

a durham, nc, grand jury indicted three innocent young men for rape, duke university subsequently suspended them-- and they were WRONG. innocent until proven guilty-- some people really are.

  • thank you, mr. blumenthal

[Read the article: A Southern, and liberal, Lady]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

a beautiful piece about a beautiful woman. it is also good to remember that lyndon johnson left us a civil rights legacy as well as the vietnamese war fiasco.

  • i'm glad you like yourself now...

[Read the article: My Southern grandmother is dying, and I don't want to go back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

because i don't. i really, really don't like you. and if you're from alabama stay away because i go there sometimes.

  • well

[Read the article: Can I have my wedding money now?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

shouldn't parents offer outright cash settlements to all their sons as well? i don't think so. a wedding is traditionally a gift to the daughter.

  • i give up

[Read the article: My big, nasty Panamanian bride's cake]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

why are we reading this? oh yes-- it was a *panamanian* wedding cake, not duncan hines. makes all the difference.

  • sorry, lw is still pond scum

[Read the article: I can't get home to see my mom before she dies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

round trip airfare between chicago and asheville is $600.; it's been less. cheaper still is to fly to charlotte and rent a car, then drive. i bet lw's mom-- who flew to california for his wedding--would have lent him the money anytime over the past 7 years.

in my book "love" is an active verb. for lw it must be just an emotion that hits him now & again: "i luv sunsets, i luv mom, i luv chocolate ice cream, yum yum."

i wonder how fast lw could get to asheville if there were a legacy involved?

i am reminded of an edna st. vincent millay poem i read somewhere. anybody got it?

  • aka smith

[Read the article: I can't get home to see my mom before she dies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

my cna merline, who makes about $10. an hour & who clears less than that, meets your definition of a poor person, i assume. last year she flew to philadelphia for a sister's 60th birthday party. this year she flew to one family reunion and will drive to another next month. rich or poor, for some people family is priceless. for others-- meh, not so much. tennis's response is just an excuse for the selfish. "hey mom, sorry i couldn't be there when you croaked-- or any time previously-- but oh the pain! the pain!"

you know, i grew up poor, although we didn't consider it that. my first cousins still lived on the farm & didn't have an indoor toilet until the 1970s: *that* is poor. i started my work life on a pretty low rung. i remember one time thinking i could just make it to payday on tuna casseroles-- if i had the tuna. i scavenged every returnable bottle in my crummy basement apartment, then around the complex, to be able to afford three cans on sale. i was too proud to ask my parents for any assistance-- they lived a state away-- but if one of them were seriously ill, i would have begged or borrowed to get to them. family matters or it does not. all else is an excuse.

  • re: those folk in new mexico without running water...

[Read the article: I can't get home to see my mom before she dies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

i feel bad about them. i feel guilty, i really do. and because i feel guilty, per cary tennis, i am absolved of all guilt. more than that, i am actually worthy of praise. i am really rather marvelous! and it cost me nothing!!!!

  • the 20th century's greatest artist?

    [Read the article: Remembering Bergman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

i respect the late mr. bergman, but i posit that d w griffith was a far greater director. he invented so much of the raw language of film, while when i think of bergman i recall only images.

  • in my little corner of the world

[Read the article: No more gin and tonics!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

the year round favorite is still bourbon & branch water...

but if you have to serve something fancier (or have a set of monogrammed julep cups you got as a wedding gift) add sugar water, ice & crushed mint, & make it a julep...

or if your inlaws are baptists serve sweet tea

  • question

[Read the article: Chris Matthews skewers Mitt Romney]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

do republican fathers have some special right to send their sons into the military? are democrat dads responsible when their adult sons drink, do drugs & then are arrested speeding? what if romney's 5 son were all serving in iraq-- would we all proclaim him the next president?

can we have one presidential election on the issues?

    you said it all.

  • or it could be

[Read the article: Fishing for boys, pedicures for girls]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

a rough & tumble boys only day camp refers to a camp without restroom facilities of any kind. that's one reason for keeping it uni-sex.

  • well

[Read the article: My close friend has clammed up]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

perhaps "dear friend" assesses you and "mutual friend" to be a couple of nosy gossips, and she wanted to keep her private business private. refreshing in this day and age.

  • LW, go on being judgmental

[Read the article: I'm so damned judgmental!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Those criticizing you are themselves being judgmental-- and hypocrites. Maybe you just have standards. Keep them.

  • federal prosecution

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

vick RAN to strike a plea with the federal prosecutors to forestall a trial on the state level. he is scared pea green of longer state sentences, state prison, and having the details of his doggie death camp unrolled day by day in the newspapers. here's hoping that the commonwealth of virginia seeks this opportunity for a high profile trial to expose this blood "sport" in all its rottenness.

and no, vick was not stupid. he was cruel, nasty, mean, sadistic-- but he knew what he was doing. he relished the suffering of those animals. "stupid" is a word reserved for the arguments of his defenders.
