I'll be honest, I think Clinton was a mediocre president, and I dont really know any great accomplishments about Hillary Clinton. I think Clinton gets a lot of praise simply because he is the ONLY democrat to serve 2 terms since FDR. but anyway....
As someone who lived through Reagan and Bush 1, Clinton 1,2 and now Bush 1,2 please permit me to share.
I graduated with a white collar degree under Reagan 2. By that time his deficits had sunken the economy the likes of which hadn't been seen in my lifetime and every last scrap of tax writeoffs for the middle-class and college graduates had been eliminated. For instance income averaging, which used to exist to help new college graduates save to pay back their loans, for down payments on cars and homes et al, by averaging their income over five years to keep them in a lower tax bracket - gone. consumer credit interest you used to be able to write off - gone. ETC. Then Bush 1 raised taxes - but on the middle class instead of the wealthy REagan had been giving a free lunch to and sunk the economy further. They were staring into the biggest national deficits the country had ever seen - about 200 billion a year and everything was coming ungluded.
Thank God Clinton got in and for the first time in 12 years the wealth (top 1/10th of 1%) had to shell up their first tax dollar in almost 12 years. So they were out to impeach him before he was even inaugerated. AT the same time coalitions of radical right groups aligned by Newt Gingrich formed GOPAC which along with a wealth of perfectioning of electronic soundbyte distributing mechanisms and falsehood perpetuated got enough Americans to demonize Clinton and to blame Republican ruins on him to takeover Congress. The very first thing the Republican Congress did was remove the ability for executive boards to be held accountable in civil courts for willfully misrepresenting their financials (aka cooking the books). Clinton vetoed it, and the GOP had the margin in Congress to override it. 5 years later you saw the Enron, MCI, etc debacles which continue to allow the big corporations to rip off their employees, investors and creditors without a worry. (a few of them were tried in *criminal courts - which means even if they do a little time they still get to keep the loot they stole). That's the least of what the Republicans did - and Clinton fought a good fight for what he was up against. He stood them up in everything from them trying to shut down the government to that kangaroo court impeachement. Because he appointed geniuses instead of boobs to his cabinent and becuase finally (unlike Reagan and Bush) the private sector growth was rapidly outpacing public sector growth for the first time in over a decade there were more jobs, and I mean good paying jobs, than we had seen since JFK.
Tech was soaring because their was an Administration that understood that if you want a first rate country you have to focus on "new economy" labor intensive industries - aka tech and science. And that growth really does "trickle down" as we saw because these were regular workers who went out and bought cars and computers and furniture, unlike tax cuts for people already up in the stratosphere who just buy another bond or another vacation.
But the press and the liberal left and the radical right funded with country-club money won in the end and they painted Al Gore as a nutjub and we got stuck with Bush. Well, God I hope you know the story since. Makes the 104th,105th Congress Clinton had to deal with seem like the good old days. Back to deficits - only 400-500billion a year ensuring young people will pay high taxes the rest of their life getting NO govt services cause it will all be just servicing debt. India, China, West Europe AND Israel have all surpassed us in technological innovation. Hell, our companies buy their internal designs from everything from chips to cellphones.
We now have at least 3 generations of court judges from the lowest to the highest that hate labor/workers with a white hot fire. (which is what it was really about, not abortion and gay marriage).
Without apology I want someone who knows what their up against and how to fight back. Not someone playing the race card and pandering ambiguously to hope and calling the Clintons, the people who fought for the middle and poor more than anyone of my lifetime "agents of the past".
In fact I've lost all respect I had for Obama by even spouting that claptrap. It's despicable to anyone who lived through this and remembers.
I too unfortunately believe McCain is the next President. The nutroots insistance on promoting a hot air balloon like Obama that has no experience or even a plan for anything and now instilling a race war has set the future as surely as we type.
However painting McCain as anything other than a worthless pig is beyond belief.
What has McCain ever done ? He's fought for the richest at least as well as Bush we can say that. He had to have sang his heart out to the Vietcong or he'd never have survived 5 years as a POW - no honest person would dispute that.
Upon returning he promptly dumped his wife who nursed him for a younger, richer model (whom he then persistently screwed around on with sleazy strippers) and then used HER family fortune to launch a 40 year political campaign where he spent 40 years telling us and writing books about how patriotic he was because the 'Cong caught him. (no mention of course of how he cooperated with them).
Oh, and McCain helped pass a campaign finance bill that he himself doesn't abide by.
You people who can't appreciate the good government you got from the Clintons (unlike us "old bitter yesterfolk") indeed get the government you deserve.
