I tried to post this on your previous blog but it didn't take.
First, Joe Klein writes a column on how dare John McCain try to stop the press from doing its job. Then, after Palin's speech, Brian Williams reads part of Klein's column on air, including all of the Repub lies about her record, ending with Klein's call to his colleagues to stand up to McCain. He's seconded in this by Tom Brokaw.(?!?) Today, Jay can't-remember-last name--who did the Time interview with a crabby McCain--is interviewed on MSNBC where he takes out Nicole Wallace (McC press person)for daring to suggest that asking Palin questions isn't a perfectly reasonable effort--Jay really displayed a lot of contempt towards the MCC camp for a mild mannered press guy.
I attribute all this to you Glenn, going after Klein so hard--it's WORKING. And I'm sure the media is pissed off that their boyfriend McCain is being so ungrateful. If he loses them, he is toast, I think.
That said, I do wish SOMEONE in the Obama camp would really go after Palin--she is George Bush 2000 and we all know how well that worked out, don't we? But she is just preaching to the choir--the lunatic people who still approve of Bush-Cheney. According to the focus group reports I read today, Palin played very badly with independents. But Obama needs to step it up--and I am sure he is capable of that. And HRC needs to talk out--her supporters apparently don't dig Palin at all.
I read Joe Klein's blog on McCain's sense of entitlement of receiving only positive coverage from the media and his call to his fellow journalists to stand up to McCain's attempt at intimidation and to continue to find out the truth about Palin. Then, after Palin's speech, Brian Williams actually read out Klein's critique of Palin and the call to stand firm which was then seconded by Tom Brokaw! Glenn, this NEVER would have happened but for your critiques of the MSM, I am convinced. You are changing things for the better--Brian Williams--who would have thought?
I'm glad Obama is taking the high road but I agree with all those who think this topic is fair game--how many millions of our tax dollars are spent on "abstinece education"? How much time and energy was wasted in a non-stop examination of Clinton's foibles? Republicans deserve this--and McCain was comparing Obama to Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton?!?
I just emailed your column to a friend who doesn't agree with me that Obama needs to hit harder--I'm getting that sinking feeling about this election...but I do agree with a lot of the posters here that the MSM is a huge problem--if the Dems went after McCain in a strong fashion, the media would not cover it or attack Dems...I mean, look at all this bull about "what's really going on with Hillary and Bill and Obama...what are they really thinking...what does their body language tell us?"- it seems to be a totally manufactured controversy-it is nauseating. Or they interview EACH OTHER, for god's sake, instead of covering Duckworth or Kerry...jesus, Tom Brokaw came out and basically said you can't attack McCain because of his military service--and this guy is going to be the MODERATOR of one of the debates!?! That said, I think these Dems are wimps--I agree with Jeffrey P. Harrison-they are all addicts--addicts for power..
Who was the snarkmeister who decided the band would play "Addicted to Love" at the end of Clinton's speech? That said, I thought he was great, loved Kerry and Tammy Duckworth too. As the NY Times said, Clinton is a master speaker when he isn't pouting.
This is pretty off-topic but where is John Murtha at this convention? And did anyone read about Steny Hoyer's multiple burly bodyguards--is the man getting death threats? He deserves them.
As far as the Bush stuff--I think it's a measure of how awful he has been that people just want him gone--to pretend that he never even existed. So it's hard even to get snarky about him or enjoy the snark of others. The Dems should look to the future--that's what people want. And it's probably great revenge on Bush to have him be so irrelevant and have people show a lack interest in him--jail would be better but being ignored for a politician is probably a huge punishment. I would feel the same about all the foreign policy dominoes now knocking each other down (Maliki's timetable, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia)in a classic case of the chickens coming home to roost except that we the people will pay the price of that...
As someone who was increasingly appalled by Clinton's behavior during the primaries, I thought she did great. She is one powerful woman...I suspect this latter-day Clinton-Obama feuding was largely a MSM creation. She really made every point she needed to--of course, the "pundits" at FOX didn't agree--more than anything I hope a Democratic victory will mean at least some of these tools, like Kristol--will lose whatever access they have to favoring us with their "thinking."
I hope someone at this convention (maybe Biden) will make the point that McCain will be even WORSE than Bush was--as someone said, the people advising McCain are neo-cons who think Bush was too timid...God help us ...
