Re: No excuses for Vista

@Wonyho

You wrote: "In fact, Apple and its developers distribute much of their software in a "Universal Binary" format, which can support up to four difference processor types in the same file."

This isn't true. The Universal binary format for Mac OS X is compiled code for both the PowerPC and the Intel-based Macs. It won't run on any processors except those two, nor was it ever intended to do that.

You're thinking of the NeXT Fat Binary, when NeXT stopped making their own hardware, switched to OpenStep and made it possible for OpenStep to run on other machines as long as they used a compatible Motorola, Intel, Sun Sparc, and PA-RISC processors. The underlying format of both is the same, but the ability to run Universal binaries on non-Apple hardware or even other processors isn't there.

With current versions of Xcode, developers can create a four-architecture binary (32 bit and 64 bit versions for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs), but it still won't run on other hardware or processors.

Shutdown Time

@macalypse:

Your wrote: "Mac people (by that I mean people who use mac products exclusively as opposed to someone like me who owns products from both MS and Apple) are irrational and don't evaluate things objectively. They tend to see Apple as this friendly entity and MS as a corporate bully, when the reality is both companies are pretty manipulative about getting money out of their customers."

Actually, it's your statement about Mac users being irrational that is itself irrational. If you see everyone who disagrees with your viewpoint as being incapable of having an objective viewpoint, then by definition, your view would also be subjective.

Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to look down on the opinions of others or make judgements about them unless you actually understand their viewpoint.

No threat from prosecution.

It certainly stretches credibility if the woman charged says she didn't create the account, but had access to it. So, is she implying that her daughter, a classmate of the girl who committed suicide, created the account? Not likely, since her daughter would have no motive, and apparently never had any sort of disagreement with the victim.

Without some convincing evidence to the contrary, it's safe to say at this point that indeed Lori Drew created the account for the sole purpose of inflicting emotional distress upon the victim, though the motive has yet to be discovered. She should be prosecuted and put in prison.

She clearly had malice when she created an account for this purpose, and as such needs to be held accountable for her actions. She's an adult and should have known better, but even if she didn't think her actions would result in the suicide of the victim, it doesn't excuse her actions. Prosecuting her is good law, and it will make others think more carefully before engaging in similar conduct in the future.

Bachmann is not a conservative.

She's a nut without a screw. This is the woman who was at the state Capitol during a rally for the LGBT community and she was hiding in the bushes, spying on them, as though they were lepers with an infectious disease that would jump to her and transform her into one if she dared approach them or talk to them. When she was spotted and approached for an interview by the local Fox station, she screeched out of there in the minivan with her crew.

She doesn't know the meaning of the word conservative, much less anything else. People think I'm paranoid; this woman is beyond the pale in that area. She sees a conspiracy in everything. As far as we know, the cups and plates in her home are in a conspiracy against her.

I fail to see how the people of her district could possibly elect her to office; she knows absolutely nothing about government; she accuses everyone except herself of being anti-American and wants to return to McCarthyism; and she still doesn't grasp the basics of the Constitution, where it explicitely gives the federal government the power to tax and spend, unlike the Republican solution to everything, which is to cut taxes for the wealthy and spend anyway, thus incurring massive debt. Tax cuts have never created any jobs, no matter what any so-called Conservative may claim.

She may not be afraid of saying what she believes, but judging by the content of her statements, only a schizophrenic who's off their meds would say these things. The people of her district and the state of Minnesota can and do deserve much better than her.

Cheap ways to upgrade your laptop.

@Bellerophon:

Contrary to your assertion, Ubuntu is not a user-friendly OS, nor does it have nearly the number of robust applications that are available for a Mac. It seems you think open-source replacements for wothless MS applications aren't available for a Mac; surprise--they are!

The Mac also has a very active user community for help, as well as excellent technical support, which isn't available for Ubuntu or any flavor of Linux. So while you labor under the delusion that Ubuntu is meant for average users, the many millions of Mac users who know better will keep on working quite productively.

Mac laptops have longer service life - really?

Yes, really. There is ample data to show this, but you choose to ignore it .

It's not wishful thinking that Macs don't have security problems; it's fact, pure and simple. If you want to go through life believing that there are viruses and all sorts of malware for Macs, you're welcome to join the many people who obviously don't know what they're talking about.
