Have to disagree a bit.
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That was unfortunately the "old" NBA. Up until this series, I had truly enjoyed the NBA playoffs for the first time in years.
It seemed like we had more passing, more defense, and wow, just more close, fun games. The NBA playoffs had sucked me back in.
And then this series comes along. I thought, what a great match up--an up and coming superstar coach against a legend. Two fantastic teams. Should be good stuff.
But instead, it has turned we have reverted to the superstar gets all the calls, especially at home motiff.
Nowitizki will get a few in Dallas, so I'm sure that might even out.
But that game last night was possibly the worst I've seen in the playoffs. The media is always wanting to crown the next Jordan, and in Wade getting ton of phantom foul calls, I have to wonder if he really IS the next Jordan. Sure, hell of a player, nearly unstoppable, but especially unstoppable if he is going to be allowed to shove off, travel, and get nearly all calls possible.
The most horrendous to me was not the fourth quarter. It was the 3rd quarter where the refs whipped out the whistles, and killed the flow of the game. Mavs fan, Heat fan, or none, you have to admit that it just ruins the game.
And it got the Heat right back in it, with very little time taken off of the clock. There was a reason Avery got a T. He was screaming for some equitable officiating, and he wasn't getting it.
I had that same sickening feeling in my stomach as when I watched Portland get bumped unjustly by the Lakers a few years back (ok, quite a few years back now). In the NBA, the refs can, and do, really and truly determine outcomes.
Which is too bad, because otherwise the product had seemed to finally be improving again.

Interesting

[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was lucky enough to see this movie at a cast and crew screening, and it most certainly is a lot of fun.
I disagree a bit with Stephanie, though. To let you know where I come from with Tarantino, I loved Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and have disliked about everything he's done since. Jackie Brown committed the cardinal sin of being boring, and the Kill Bill schlock was an uneven mess.
"Death Proof" is uneven as well. His dialog scenes are really lame and predictable banter. You overhear better stuff in most coffee shops these days. If you want to make the argument that the lame banter is part of his "homage," then perhaps you're right but then I start to wonder if anyone has noticed that all Tarantino has ever done is an "homage" or a "tribute?" I had real high hopes for him, and his love for film seems to be genuine, but only Kurt Russell and some good stunt work rescues "Death Proof." Even then, the tough chick amazon talk during said stunt scenes is pretty annoying. Count how many times you feel Tarantino is talking through his actresses--it gets annoying.
All that said--"Planet Terror" is a fantastic thrill ride and much more captures the spirit of what I think both were shooting for. "Planet Terror" and the previews, and any scene with Russell in "Death Proof" are worth the price of admission.
Friendly tip--when you see the second set of girls chatting while eating breakfast, its a good time for your bathroom break, since there is no intermission. You won't miss much.
