Original article: Boys will be girls

Tomboys

If this was a girl, wouldn't we just say "tomboy" and move on to the next subject? I have a friend whose kid only wanted to wear his Superman outfit--this went on for two years (3-5). Now he is 7 and Superman is ancient history and he doesn't think he has superpowers. Let the kid wear a dress to school and everyone just get back to minding their own business!

Original article: Why Johnny can't code

Read Carefully

I suspect the number of commentors who missed the author's point serve as examples to reinforce the author's point. But in case you missed it, the author is not trying to teach his son to be a programmer. He is trying to teach his son a more basic understanding of logic, algortihms, and computer hardware.

Original article: Hack the vote? No problem

What Am I Missing?

So you can hack the machines and steal an election thus subverting the democratic process. I don't reaaly see the fuss here. Didn't hacking bring us TIVO or something. Quit worrying and enjoy the good life!

Original article: Requiem for a poker game

Texas Hold'em

I love poker, but when someone tells me the game will be Texas Hold'em I say: See you later. I've got to go home and watch Friends reruns.

The TV popularity of Texas Hold'em has ruined the neighborhood game. All in!? Why? So I can sit around and watch everyone else play poker for 3 hours?

Heating & Flicker

If I get cold this winter, in addition to keeping my incandescent light bulbs, I'm going to buy a second refrigerator. Those babies really put out the heat!

The new CFLs don't flicker.

4:18 Out of Bounds

basebalman:

I noticed this too, but I think the ref had blown the whistle thus ending the play. I'm not positive of this--maybe someone will check the tape.

Original article: Through a bong, darkly

Environmental Laws

Significant pieces of environmental legislation (check the dates):

Wilderness Act 1964

Endangered Special Act 1973

National Environmental Policy Act 1969

Clean Air Act 1970

Clean Water Act 1972 (1st version)

Not bad. Since then...?

Counting Trips

Most of the local farmer's at my market do their in-town shopping after the market, so you can argue for not counting their miles since they would have traveled them anyways. So yes, it is more complicated.

Also, those of you who want to argue from the premise that everyone can't buy local food or all of our food can be grown locally need to relax. Its like my granpa who smoked his whole life (and died of emphysema) who when told he needed to quit smoking would reply: "You're gonna die from something." Growing more of our food locally (and organically) is better than less.

Subscription

I'm about one more ridiculous article from canceling my subscription--and I have been a subscriber from the beginning of paid subscriptions.

Buchanan is concern trolling.

Number, not Amount

C'mon Alex! It is "number of people" not "amount of people" (unless you are weighing them).

Craigslist?

Hasn't this author heard of Craigslist? I just looked for my area and there are plenty of cars under $3000. Fake problem. Fake news.
