"We're allowed to shit our britches because we're the children. You're supposed to be the adults!"

Yeah, it's scary for you, isn't it? The idea that we may not always be there to build the world up so your lot can tear it down again. It would really suck for you to have to live in the world you espouse, instead of having the security that responsible people will do the hard work of keeping things running while you have your tantrums.

No convinced, GayAsXmas

All you've done is explain your own perception of the film, which clearly doesn't jibe with many other perceptions or indeed many of the reviews I've read. Yes, funny enough, I do do more research than the box cover. I figure the four years I spent as a filmmaker myself gives me a bit of a trained eye at spotting genre standard fare, as well. But thanks for trying to paint me as some kind of phillistine, I'm sure it makes you feel more validated.

Even in your own comments you indicate that the woman was willing to make a go of it only after she had already gotten pregnant. So a large element of her perceived choice is taken away even before she makes the big-hearted decision to try things out further with the dork. Heaven forbid that she regrets her fling and gets an abortion, or decides that getting pregnant doesn't mean she has to be a symbolic martyr (woman who has it all settles for guy who has so little). No, in the realm of tired Hollywood reality, a good woman is a beautiful, intelligent, self-sufficient woman ready to settle downward for the schlub. Because all a guy needs is a good heart, while a woman still has to be the total package.

And in that you somehow see progress? As the kids say, "whatever".

But how?

Apologies for posting without reading the other letters first, but this is an issue dear to my heart and I want to get my thoughts down while still fresh.

I've been beating this drum for a while now. The EC clearly has to go at some point, as it's the one thing keeping us from becoming a modern country. If we had normal elections like most nations, then we would be much closer to Europe, Canada, Scandinavia, and other progressive countries in our policies and laws. And this is a good thing, regardless of what the regressive atavists who worships America's mythical Golden Age believe.

However, what I want to know is how we get this thing abolished. Right now it's only progressive states showing any motion on this part. It's very unlikely you'll get the Corn Belt states, and others who benefit from disproportionate representation, to surrender their power. After all, they already consider themselves the true defenders of Real America (TM), in spite of making up less than 25% of its population. Asking them to go along with abolishing the EC is like asking a Crusader to trample the cross.

I think a lot of Americans don't need convincing that the EC should be abolished. They already believe it. Still, it's good to get the message out. But what I think really needs to be said is what can we do NOW to get the process going. Because the only thing that will save this country in the long run is freedom from the tyranny of the minority.

Great candidates indeed

A shame then that neither Dennis nor Ron has a chance of becoming an official candidate. There's always great people running, we just never get a shot at voting for them.

Seven in five?

We're way behind schedule. I guess the current power structure will have to seize control for at least another term. Have to finish the job, don't you know?

Off-topic post

What the hell is going on at Salon? You've closed the It depends on what the meaning of the word "I" is post for comments, the first time I've ever seen that happen. What, are you officially the HRC For President site now and have to suppress all dissent?

I recently sent a the Letter To The Editors outlining my discontents with Salon. As someone who has subscribed for around 5 years (hard to be sure, since your new subscription system reset my membership date), I would have thought you might care. But your silence in reply, coupled with this new act of censorship, only makes me more certain that letting my sub lapse at the end of this month is a Good Idea.

Keep up the Hillary boosting and the censorship, Salon. God knows the DNC alone isn't doing enough to alienate true liberals.

"Reader Howard K"

Yeah, that's me. Not commentor Howard K, or Salon subscriber and supporter Howard K, but "reader". Barely distinguished from anonymous. Hell, you'd probably prefer me to be anonymous, since anonymous posters are sacrosanct these days.

Thanks to pgroce for updating me on Salon's policy. A shame Salon couldn't have pointed it out on their own. I guess passing on information like that would have broken the flow of Tim taking umbrage and all. Sorry if I struck a nerve over your HRC apologia, Tim. Please continue to microparse HRC's words, I'm sure she'd never think to do it herself.

Oh, and thanks again for another sterling example of how Salon continues to alienate its formerly loyal base. In case you've missed the not-at-all-subtle signs, I'm sick of not being heard, as are apparently a lot of other posters. We're sick of not being heard by our Representatives, by our media, by our justice system. Damned if I'm going to pay for the privilege of not being heard by you as well.
