Mac is a brand, not a technology

People who buy macs just buy it for the logo. Everything Apple has been removed from the mac, so now people are running BSD Unix (like Linux, but less fun) on an intel box. If Apple was so wonderful, why did they ditch their own technology?

Ah yes

Thanks for reminding me why I dropped Salon Premium. BTW, does Salon report news anymore, or is it just an opinion rag?

Sad state for Camille

Glen Greenwald gets more and better letters and hits on an average day than poor Camille at her worst. Why does Salon keep paying Camille when she is rating lower than the daily blogs?

Umm, yea, lets be like Medieval Europe

Umm, yea, lets be more like Medieval Europe when flea-born and sewage-related diseases killed untold numbers of people. Brilliant idea.

Google can be a huge help

Physician's assistants and doctors spend very little time on patients during visits, and are often wrong. Googling symptoms can be the only source of good information if your doctor or PA is distracted or just dumb.

A month after I was exposed to someone with a bad case of mononucleosis, I came down with a high fever, lack of appetite, and extreme fatigue. I went to the doctor for a note to take to my boss saying that I would be goofy (and miss a lot of work) for the next six to eight weeks. My doctor promptly claimed that I had internal bleeding and that I needed emergency surgery. Fortunately the people at the hospital sent me home uncut.

A week later I went back asking for the note saying I had mono, and he sent me for blood tests for hypothyroidism. I had googled my symptoms and knew that I would have been gaining weight with hypothyroidism, not losing it rapidly as I had been. The doctor included a mono test "to make me happy" and to make me shut up about me claiming that I had mono.

Guess what- Google and common sense beat the "trained professional" and I finally got my note when the tests came back. Good thing I knew from Google about not drinking alcohol for several weeks, as my doctor never told me not to drink and it took him three weeks to make a simple diagnosis.

The Dems are doomed this election

For crying out loud, the dems have a woman named Clinton (who voted for the Iraq war) and a black guy who's name rhymes with Osama running against an unnamed republican white guy. The republicans are going to walk away with this election rather easily.

Went downhill

The premise was great for about one and a half seasons, after that the stories started getting stale. Firefly was better and smarter. Doctor Who is open-ended enough for decades of new ideas. BSG is held back by it's limited scope.

Targets

The dumb thing is that aircraft carriers have been obsolete since 1945. My family that served on them in the 1970's called them "Targets" as they would have lasted about ten minutes in a war with the Soviet Union. Their alleged purpose was to launch as many planes before the got hit. Their real purpose was to funnel money to defense contractors.

Now that the US spends a lot of time bombing non-nuclear nations, the aircraft carriers have a purpose again. Aircraft carriers are extremely expensive floating renaissance festivals pretending that nuclear bombs don't exist and praying that they are never called on to bomb a non third-world nation.

Targets indeed

"They are hardly 'targets', what they are is a self contained battle group that can operate anywhere and do for the most part, any role."

But, when faced with crude 1940's tech fission bombs built by the North Koreans, the carriers run away like frightened children. Aircraft carriers are defenseless bathtub toys against even crude nuclear weapons. They had their glory days int he 1940's, but World War II is over, and has been for a long time.

I used to like Hillary and Bill

For starters, I liked Edwards the most, and was neutral between Hillary and Obama. When the race started, I was interested to see who would win and who would lose. Then it became clear that Obama had won and that Hillary should drop out and support him. She didn't. Bill started spouting off, making me lose respect for him. Hillary kept int he race, throwing mud and trying to drag down the future nominee. I am not a huge Obama fan, but I resent Hillary helping McCain so much.

Hillary is hurting her reputation and weakening the democratic party. She lost the race. She needs to accept that and move on. Spending her husband's money chasing after a failed dream is narcissistic and bad for the nation.

BSG is lame, Dr. Who won

I watched BSG and Dr Who back to back for a while. Some nights BSG kicked ass while Dr. Who was lame, and other nights things were reversed. That ended over a year ago. Now, Dr. Who kicks BSG's butt. Any time a Dalek gets whiney or has any self doubt it kills itself or gets shot in the back by another Dalek withing 30 minutes. The Cylons could learn a lot from them.

Original article: Nuclear bomb

So, why is everyone building nuclear?

The world is building nuclear plants because they work. Solar and wind have a place, but they can't supply a reliable or controllable base load. You can't have the cities go dark on cloudy windless days.

Lame

BSG ran out of ideas at least a year ago. The "final five" business was fairly pathetic.

If things go really well they will realize that humanity moved to a different solar system, one where the Serenity still flies jobs while running from the law and the reavers. Then we can get the Firefly crew back on the air.
