Where is Bush's money?

Cheney is making money, but what is Bush getting? Is he just a dumb stooge?

I wish Cheney would just embezzle a billion dollars and go away like your average despot. Making money by crashing the US into the ground is just inefficient.

Original article: Not in my backyard, either

One Anecdote?

There are disgusting poor people who don't know how to raise their kids and disgusting rich people who don't know how to raise their kids. The disgusting rich people have neater houses because they have housekeepers, and their neglected children tend to turn out better because of better schools and access to better lawyers and rehabs. That said, it doesn't take much effort on google to find rich kids gone bad.

The author should be happy that she didn't have disgusting rich neighbors. In addition to causing trouble, they do things like build fences on your land, complete with fraudulent surveys claiming that they own the land in question. You won't get your land back without a long court battle that they can afford better than you. Also, they can harass you legally by calling the police on you randomly for no good reason and calling the fire department when you grill outside (claiming that you are lighting fire to the brush) and get away with it. Also, you can't evict the rich people, but they may be able to evict you.

To say "Wow, my neighbors were disgusting, so those Katrina evacuees must all be scum!" is completely inappropriate and insulting, and is not worthy of Salon. Smearing a group based on one anecdote a mark of bad journalism. I could write up a "All horse owners are sociopaths" story with worse stories presented in this article.

More expensive junk?

Apple is good at convincing teenagers to buy easily-broken plastic things that cost more and do less than the competition. Viva advertising!

Teenagers are going to have a hard time convincing their parents to blow $500 on a cell phone. I don't have high expectations for this gizmo.

The way to frighten conservatives

Point out that a democrat may be elected president next, and they could make Janet Reno the AG again. Tell conservitives to imagine Janet Reno with the power to throw them in jail forever and torture them without a trial. Then see how keen they are for the government to have so much power.

Original article: The president's tears

Staged stunt or is Bush a girly man?

Rove goofed up on this one. Bush's hard core base will view the tear as a sign of weakness. Liberals and moderates will wonder it it was fake.

The US has lost another war to a third-world country. It makes me wonder why we blow $500 billion a year on a fighting force that would likely lose to Somalia.

Original article: Where's the outrage?

Protests do nothing

General strikes, wide scale civil disobedience, and whatnot work, but holding a sign and chanting accomplishes nothing. In France when the unions want to make a point, they shut down the highway system. If they just marched and chanted the government would ignore them.

It is well within our power to stop the war, but it will take nationwide action that actually threaten to damage the economy. People would have to go to jail and the press will ignore them and then vilify them, but it can be done.

Why post this garbage?

I wonder if some people at Salon put up crazy stories just to see big numbers in the letters. Not all attention is good attention.

Your favorite band sucks

I thought I would keep up the originality and tone of this poorly thought-out article.

Original article: Camille's back!

You just made up my mind

I have been on the fence on my Salon premium for a few months as I only read Salon for the war room these days. The return of Camille Paglia ends my paying subscription.

Original article: We are meant to be here

Wow, I have never heard this one before!

Why is Salon posting such an old and goofy conceit as if it were something new? The living things made of dark matter, if any, have a much better claim to the anthropic principle than do we. We are some solar-powered self-organized junk growing like yeast cells in the outskirts of a galaxy, not IMHO, the grand reason why the universe exists.

Romney's problem

The republican base is evangelical, and they consider Romney to be a hell-bound heretic. The evangelicals and the Mormons play nice in public, but they are further apart than the Shia and the Sunnis when it comes to theology.

War porn

I am sickened by these 'Touching stories of sacrifice' narrated by celebrities. Watch German documentaries on WW2 for a more sober perspective. Just don't expect the happy pablum spooned out in the US versions.

Pro-Coal Lobby?

One has to wonder if Bonnie Raitt and co. were hired by coal lobbiests, as they are the only people they are helping. Nuclear power has been kept under wraps for decades because of cheap fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. Now that these are expensive, people worldwide are building nukes.

Rich nations like the US and Germany can muddle along with fossil fuels or by buying power from neighboring nuclear-powered nations, but it is silly. If we choose as a nation to spend the extra money and spew the extra CO2, that is our shame.

Coal is still cheap, so if they scuttle the nuclear plants, we can expect coal instead. Viva the status quo!

Frustrated and lashing out

Marathon running is not a team sport, it is impossible to blame your failings on anyone but yourself. Oprah running slowly doesn't make the American Olympic athletes run more slowly. The US doesn't value things that take a long time to master, so training a runner from the age of 18 to 28 is not done in the US as it is done in other places, hence we lose marathons.

I do see that a very American trait is on display here, failing at something and blaming everyone but yourself.

Use Linux if you like Unix

If people like running Unix on an intel box, just get Ubuntu Linux for free. It is cheaper than a mac or windows, and it is better than both. Mac people are paying for something that others get for free. Why? Is the Apple Icon really worth the extra money?
