Oh no, what is next?

Legalizing and taxing marijuana?

Reducing the sentence for crack relative to powder cocaine?

Not locking up a significant fraction fo the population at huge expense?

A person can dream....

Finally, someone smart.

I heard the looked at the amount of concrete and steel it takes to replace nuclear power plants with wind turbines, and they shifted into nuclear mode. If you want your power carbon neutral, nuclear is the best way to go.

As for "Eternal Poison" the environmental impact of making a radioactive waste site is not even vaguely comparable to melting the polar ice caps via global warming. The most nightmarish fantasies about nuclear power don't come close to what we have managed to do with coal power and fossil fuels.

Missing the point

The whole idea behind "abstinence only" sex education is to produce babies. Every industrialised nation is lamenting their low birth rates, so the religious groups are actually doing something about it by sabotaging sex-ed and trying to demonize birth control. If you want a population of uneducated women producing babies, sabotaging sex-ed and driving up teen pregnancy is an effective way to go. When you cite statistics showing that abstinence education results in more babies this only encourages the groups promoting it.

Someone needs to be a grown up

I am happy that Obama is stepping up and actually leading. The private industry and "invisible hand" of the market have shown themselves to be failures. This is a time where the government needs to take a firm grip on the economy and clean up the disaster brought on by deregulation.

For-profit industry

Let's face it, the insurance industry has America by the throat and it is not letting go. They are bleeding amazing amounts of money out of our pockets and they essentially own big chunks of the government. I don't expect a rational health care system until someone somehow takes down the insurance companies.

Extrordinary Rendition

As has been established by the previous president, Obama can have he people receiving the AIG bonuses kidnapped and sent away for torture without trial. They have caused more damage than any terrorists, so why not?

Original article: You are not your brain

Your brain isn't everything

Your glands are very important too. Remove some glands and your personality can change a great deal. You are more than your brain, your whole body is important in how you behave and what you think.

As for the philosophy mumbo-jumbo that doesn't like neuroscience, give me some evidence. Dorm-room chat level stuff doesn't impress em much these days.

I gave up on the NYT

I gave up on the NYtimes when they buried the story about Bush wiretapping Americans until after the 2004 election. When the NYT worked that hard to get Bush re-elected I knew that they were not worth reading. I was wondering if they would come out with "Times SUPER select" where they post the things they know but won't put in their regular news section.

I hope that the times comes to an ignominious end. They deserve it.

Original article: Neko Case is an animal

Downtempo folk music is not "Feral"

Methinks the reviewer needs to get out more if they think that this music is anything wild or animalistic. Neko Case is certainly a good singer, but when I went to youtube to hear the music, it was anything but smooth folk.

At some point..

Americans are going to have to stop going to other nations and try to tell the people there how to live. Imagine of waves of Chinese people came over and protested how the US does things and got in the way of the police. It wouldn't go over well in the US, I imagine.

The Wingnut is entirely correct

Al of the problems faced by the GOP are the fault of the liberal media. What the GOP really needs is another FOX news channel, another Wall Street Journal, another Washington Times, and another Fox network so that the right wing will finally have a way to get their ideas out.

Also, the GOP needs to purge all moderates. Only by embracing the most extreme elements of the right can the GOP regain their former position of power.

Enron Syndrome

The republicans, like Enron, got everything they wanted. Too bad both were ultimately incompetent and both crashed and burned.

I really hope that the republicans think the way the wingnut thinks, and I hope they act on this attitude for the next few decades. The most patriotic thing the republicans can do is to remain in the gutter for as long as possible.

She just isn't funny

Why people keep dredging up Ms Sykes is beyond me. Her show was awful and quickly cancelled, and she has never been a bit funny. I just don't see the talent there.

Original article: Oprah's bad medicine

Doctors have proven to be unreliable

Let's face some facts. The FDA approves poison all too often. (Rush Limbaugh is a victim of an FDA goof with an addictive painkiller.) Many people have very bad personal experiences with doctors. "Scientific" studies are tinkered with by the companies funding the studies.

The "Scientific fact" promoted by doctors years ago was that hormone replacement was all good. The "Scientific fact" today is that it isn't all good. What will the "Scientific facts" be in four years? Who knows? The "Hard cold scientific facts" in epidemiology and drug safety studies change with the winds, so many people simply don't believe them now.

If you don't trust the "established" wisdom, people like Oprah can make sense. This doesn't make anything Oprah says correct, mind you, but she comes off as more trustworthy than the Bush-era FDA.

The medical community can either work very hard to regain the public's trust, or they can expect to see more of this type of silliness. It reminds me of the vaccines causing autism bit. If people trusted doctors, it would have been less of an issue.

American Taliban

This is domestic terrorism the same as the Taliban killing schoolgirls to keep women uneducated. It appears that the religious right has seen Islamic extremism and decided that it was something to emulate.

Protests don't bring anyone down

Armed revolt or coups bring governments down, not marching and chanting. Simply marching and complaining doesn't do anything. Sending emails isn't amazingly effective either.

If the Iranian military sides with the protesters something could happen. Until then, have fun watching the show.
