Does anyone eve wonder what the point of writing these letters could be? Who here is going to change their minds based on one of these letters?
Israel is not going to have peace for generations, no matter how it acts. When it was pursuing a peace plan it was subjected to repeated suicide bombings and hundreds of deaths. Now that it has taken a hard line it is subjected to angry letters to the editor. Israel needs a real carrot to make it rethink it's positions.
BTW, if Israel does take a softer line, the same people writing angry letters now will keep writing the angry letters in the future.
The first season and a half of BSG were great. Part of the third season was OK. After that the premise fell completely apart and the show hit the skids. When they went into the soap opera "final five BS it was of the rails and in the ditch. I tried to watch the new ep, but it was just goofy.
I hate it when a good show loses it's way and goes into lameness. Heroes was good for a season, not counting the last episode. BSG managed to make it farther, but it should have ended at season 3. The "everyone on earth was a cylon" thing was just goofy. That dumb attempt at a twist got BSG evicted from my Tivo list. I watched most of this last season by skipping through the boring stuff (made for quick viewing BTW) but even with fast forward the last episodes are looking too lame to bear.
I am worried that Hamas may have radicalized a whole generation of Israelis. For ever Israelis they kill and maim with their missiles Hamas drives more and more young and impressionable Israelis into the arms of the IDF. Until Hamas realises that they can't destroy the Israelis through military means there will be no peace.
When Russia shut off the natural gas to the Ukraine, the Ukrainians should have lobbed a bunch of missiles at Moscow in protest. According to Hamas logic, that would have motivated the Russians to see things their way and open up the pipeline again. If the Russians had responded by doing something crazy like shooting back with their vastly superior firepower, that would be barbaric of them.
I know what you are saying, Kiev and Moscow don't have centuries of bad blood... Ummm Moscow hasn't committed terrible atrocities against the Ukrainian people in recent history.... Ummm...
The reason Kiev didn't shoot missiles at Moscow is because Russia would have turned much of the Ukraine into rubble. If the Ukraine had just elected the "Shoot missiles at Moscow" party in a democratic election, I am sure this would have been taken into consideration by the Russians.
Hankest, I am with you on that one. When it came out that the Georgians shot first, it was hard for Bush and co. to keep up the outrage.
When weak powers start conventional wars with much more powerful neighbors, the weaker side is going to get mashed to pieces. War is terrible, and should not be started to "make a point." What gets me about the Gaza fighting is that many of the people making the orders to shoot at the much more powerful neighbor were doing so from the safety of another country.
While people debate this issue, the missiles from Hamas have stopped falling on Israeli cities. The Israeli military strikes did their job. The military solution worked.
People who say "There is no military solution to Hamas" have to ignore that the Israeli assault was very effective in obtaining the goals of the assault. Hamas now understands that if it lobs missiles at Israel that there will be a steep price for their aggression.
As for the idea that Hamas needs better weapons to deter future Israeli attacks, weapons don't work as deterrents if you are the one shooting first.
Klytus, I am not condoning what Israel did morally, but you can't say that it didn't work. Don't think that the Israelis didn't notice this detail.
Israel killed a lot of innocent people, apparently using weapons like white phosphorus. Sounds like war crimes to me. I doubt much will come of it.
What is the US going to say about what Israel did? "Hey, you committed war crimes against Muslims!" Join the club. Obama can say something like "We stopped doing that a week or so ago" but the US has little moral standing to make much of a fuss on the subject.
The US has killed at on the order of 100 times as many Iraqis as the Israelis killed Palestinians and for much less reason. The US dropped cluster bombs on civilian areas, tortured innocent people, drove an entire nation into anarchy, and let mercenaries run rampant all over Iraq practically without restraint. Worse, while the Israeli attacks actually stopped weapons from being fired at Israel, the carnage caused by the US did nothing to help our security. It was a pure waste of human life.
What can the US say to the Israelis? Not much. At least Hamas stopped shooting their goofy rockets.
I have to say that when people shout that Israel shouldn't exist or that it is on stolen land, an Israeli propagandist smiles. I wonder of the Israelis dropped white phosphorus to get the frenzied reactions. If the Palestinians were to take the non-violent Gandhi approach they would likely win over time, as the Indians defeated the British. I doubt the Israeli generals lose much sleep over that possibility.
