The psychology of the average american has always been to favor the bold, the dashing and the Do'er rather than the suave, thoughtful thinker as foretold by Aristotle.
The American Nation was forged in battle against the British, battle against the Elements, and its constant battles against South American countries throughout its colorful History.
American Presidents have been known to beat the war of drums, even resign from Office to join the Army and do battle. Andrew Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, the "Rough Riders" campaign, etc., all come to mind.
Today's Republican party for all its faults is at heart what a red-blooded American loves: Ride 'em Rough cowboys kinda attitude.
The Democrats are more like the slick, suave, fat cats who are thoughtful and think a lot. The Average American hates them.
Hence, unless the Democrats change their attitude, they will continue to lose presidential and congressional campaigns in 2008, 2010 and 2012.
Remember the hatred against Bush in 2004? Why didn't it translate it into a landslide for Democrats?
Think Nancy Pelosi: Your constant "pandering" and "bending over" to Republicans to "save" your ass will lead your party to utter defeat in 2008, and 2012.
If Obama were a Republican, i would vote RIGHT NOW!
US corporates, and not just carriers need to think beyond the next quarter.
Share price as an indication of an organisation's success is like saying my 1st Grade marks determine my IQ. That's stupid and dumb.
Corporate boards today have more legal power to resist shareholders who seek to sack them.
Use the power to look beyond the next quarter and derive a long-term strategy much like Singapore Airlines or Emirates.
If the share price suffers, so be it.
Profitability matters more than share price and once the profits start rolling in after 5 years the share price looks up.
Plus, the boards should tie pay for CEO exclusively to long term performance.
That is what they do for the blue-collar workers, right?
Until the profits are assured from long-term strategy rather than short-term firing of employees, the board should not pay the CEO more than the average blue collar worker being paid in the airlines.
True, not many CEOs will come forward, but then a few like Lee Iacocca will come up to take up the challenge.
There is NO way the current crop of Democrats will win the South.
In South the brave, the simpleton, and the rancher will win. All things that are not democrats.
Someone already said that this november is an election that democrats have to try hard to lose, and the democrats are really trying hard-:)
Nancy pelosi? Puhleease.. she is a weakling who has NO guts and bends over whenever cheney coughs. So there goes it. Inspite of the vigorous attacks against her by the voting public on her book promotion she never acknowledges herself as weak and inefficient.
On the other side, McCain acts strong and wilful.
Secondly, the democrats including their rockstar Obama have shown a tendency to be complex, suave politicians and not the common folk. The South prefers sons of soil who are simple in speech and thought and straight-forward. Obama is neither, plus he is a half-black to boot. Unless he selects Hillary or Gen. Clark as running mate he runs the risk of losing everywhere.
Thirdly, the democrats have never been gun-friendly. texas and south is about Guns, and getting it from their cold dead hands makes any politician jittery. So there you go again.
Gore with his anti-pollution spewing nonsense is hated by Texans everywhere.
I don't think the democrats can ever win the South: Not in a 100 years.
And i very much doubt whether november 08 is an election that the democrats will win at all...forget about crushing majority.
Pelosi is enough to sink every democrat's chances.
Thanks for taking time to respond to my post.
Am sorry if some of them were offensive. I sincerely did not mean it that way.
1. By simpleton i did NOT mean stupid. And by Straight-forward i did NOT dumb. I meant that most Southerners don't have hidden agendas, or play politics when it comes to most things. They take most politicians at face value (although with a pinch of salt), and trust them when they open their mouths.
And by this comment, i do NOT mean they can be fooled easily. All am saying is that they are not the complex, loaded-agenda Northerners who would say something and do exactly opposite. When a southerner gives his word, its a deal. I appreciate that highly and i find it difficult that most Northerners do not think so.
2. The south takes constitution seriously much more than the North. The Right to bear Arms is a Right. Northerners think that right can be subrogated for "greater" good. The South does not. The ink on the constitution says Right to Bear Arms and that is exactly at it. No compromises. It would come as a surprise to many, but the "sophisticated", "aristocratic" North would gut the constitution to meet "greater" good. The South will do no such thing. Right to privacy and personal property is enshrined and they will go to great lengths to protect that right.
This is something the spine-lacking Northerners and Democrats will never understand.
The South can never be taken for granted, but fool them once and they will never, ever forgive you.
This is what the Democrats are still to learn and that is why they will NEVER carry the South.
