The most aggravating myth, that is constantly repeated, is that Reagan won the Cold War. Being there at the end, doesn't mean you get to take credit for the work of your predecessors. The President who won the Cold War was Harry Truman. It was his policies of economic and military containment, that put the slow suffocating death grip upon the Soviet Union. His policies were continued by both republican and democratic presidents. Because Reagan was there at the end, the republicans say he won it. No he merely helped. Also if it was the invasion of Afghanistan that bankrupted the Soviet Union, that wasn't Reagan either. It was Jimmy Carter that tricked the Soviets into invading Afghanistan in the first place. It was Jimmy Carter's funding of the Afghanistan resistance that led to the Soviet invasion. Reagan was most likely the worst president to ever serve this nation, second only to W. It took almost 30 years, but the consequences of Reaganomics has finally caught up with us. The mantra of deregulate, free market absolutism has laid our economy bare.
It's obvious to me what Obama's game plan is, for continuing the state secret's claims with regards to victims of torture. He doesn't want to prosecute anyone from the past administration for ordering torture. If he allowed evidence that innocent people were tortured by gov't officials, in clear violation of the law. He would have no choice but to prosecute. Like he said again last night "No one is above the law, but I want to focus on the future". So he is engaging in obstruction of justice after the fact. It's sad and pathetic. Obama is just as complicit in the torture of people, as Bush was. That Obama ordered the torture stopped, doesn't negate the fact he's denying justice to those that were tortured. Sure not the Change I voted for.
What does WYSIWYG mean? I'd like to know. Also I already wrote Obama at the White House website. Whether it will do any good remains to be seen, I'm not holding my breath though. Maybe Obama will listen if enough people write about it. It's always best to be hopeful in this kind of situations.
As someone that spent a considerable time canvassing for Obama last summer and fall, I feel I wasted my time. Obama has been a huge disappointment. From continuing Bush policies, his opposition to prosecute Bush crimes, and much much more. Obama has not enacted any "Change" that I can see. Just more of the same. What a shame.
I have two words for Senator McConnell, FUCK YOU. I feel better now.
What we have here in America is good old fashioned FASCISM. Fascism is when the gov't rules in the interests of the corporations, not for the people. The corporate elites rule our gov't. They buy the legislation, they buy the influence. They are the people that matter, we do not. America is heading for a fall. Just as Rome collapsed due to the massive corruption of the elites, so will America. The system is so far gone, it's uncorrectable at this point. Watch out it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Glenn is exactly right with his analysis. Anyone that has advocated for changing our drug laws, has ran into that accusation. "You just want to get high without fear of arrest". It's a cheap way for opponents to dismiss your arguments, and convince themselves they are right. It's very aggravating. But as someone that has used marijuana regularly for almost 2 decades, I never fear arrest. I've never been hassled by the police. Of all the people I know that use pot, only one has been caught by the police. I'm talking hundreds of people. I live in a state (CO) where marijuana has been decriminalized. It's a hundred dollar fine if caught with less then an ounce. I don't fear getting caught. I can pay the fine. I just don't want other's to have their lives ruined for an arrest, when millions haven't. Where would Obama be today, if he had been caught using drugs as a teenager? He sure wouldn't be president. Yet he has the gall to make jokes about a serious question of marijuana being legalized. Especially when people of color are targeted by police for drug use, though the majority of drug users are white. If Obama was a true leader, he would call for a serious dialogue on the question of US drug policy. Obama has shown himself to be a political coward on everything. We have to look elsewhere for true leadership. So very aggravating.
I predict Obama will not release these last 3 OLC memos. He doesn't want to prosecute the past administration. If these memo's are released, the demand for prosecutions will be overwhelming. Obama is not going to release these memos, that is my prediction.
The "threat" of a republican filibuster calls for true political courage. If Obama had any balls, he'd call the GOP bluff on this. Yet I fear Obama has no balls, he is a political coward. He lacks the courage to make a true stand. Obama at heart is a compromiser. He isn't one to shake the boat. So he'll work out some kind of deal with the GOP. Something agreeable to both parties. Maybe release the memos but have them so heavily redacted, they would be basically worthless.
I really get annoyed with that charge of "Make Obama do it". We shouldn't have to make Obama do it, it's what we elected him to do. We put him in power to change things. We put him in power to restore the "rule of law". So I don't see why I should have to keep applying pressure to Obama. I've done enough for the man. I canvassed for months in my town. I wrote letters to my newspaper advocating for him. I did my part. Now it's Obama's time to do his. So fuck that make him do it shit.
