A lesson dems still haven't learned

The reason the dems lost the "drilling debate" was because they didn't even try to fight it. Everyone knows that more drilling won't lower prices, even Bush's own dept of energy. But did the dems even try to tell people that? No they didn't. I think the dems were hoping that the media would make their argument for them. That's the lesson the dems still haven't learned, the media isn't going to fight their battles for them. The media isn't going point out when the repubs are lying. The dems have to do that themselves. Until the dems learn that lesson, they are going to continue to lose these political battles.

Morons

I can't believe how many morons we have on this site. Those saying the dems were wise to give up this fight because the majority of Americans support more drilling are morons. Ask yourself why the majority support more drilling? Because the dems never tried to persuade them that it was BS. That more drilling won't lower the price of gas. All Americans heard was the repubs saying drill here, drill now, pay less. So of course the majority of ignorant Americans fell for the propaganda. You can't win a battle if you don't try to fight it.

Naomi Wolf

Naomi Wolf wrote a very alarming piece over on Huffpo that the election of Palin will bring a police state. That it's all being set up with the selection of Palin. Palin is an empty head that will be easily manipulated. McCain is not expected to survive his first term because of his skin cancer and she'll take over. What's even more alarming is Naomi claims that her mail and other activists has been tampered with, her bank accounts messed etc. Now we read that Army troops are being stationed in America to be used as "law enforcement". Naomi piece sounds paranoid and alarming, but I'm getting scared that she is right. Is a police state coming? A Question?

Well here's my question, how do you get people to pay attention to this army deployment inside the US, without sounding paranoid? I fear if I send it to people, they'll think I'm paranoid. How does one send Naomi's article without being called a "conspiracy theorist"? I would really like an answer to that question. I'm afraid too many Americans just don't believe it can happen here. When you look at what has gone down the past 8 years, it's unbelievable. We have a president that stole his way into office not once but twice. An administration that has defied the rule of law (ordered torture, defied subpeonas, starting an illegal war), and the poeople have barely batted an eye. Our elected representatives have down jack squat about it, even the "opposition" dems. If a police state is coming, the American sheeple won't fight it.

Same thing happened here

@Matty D. the same thing happened here in Denver. Before the convention happened, we had army unit commando's performing the same exercises. Flying through downtown with soldiers with guns hanging out the sides. Same excuse too, they were just performing training exercises. No need to be alarmed. of course the local media never questions anything the government does, or the police does for that matter. An unbelievable police assault happened during the convention that was caught on video tape. A police officer violently assaulted a code pink protestor from behind, knocking her to the ground. Well surprise surprise the DA has decided no charges will be filed, the officer did nothing wrong. This is where I get pissed. The police spokesperson says that the protestor had grabbed the officer's baton. When the video clearly shows no such thing happened and the officer struck her from behind. Yet the media won't even point out how the spokesperson's statement isn't supported by the video. Who you going to believe, us or your lying eyes?

illegal orders?

Scorpio69er, I think you faith in American soldiers is misguided at best. How many of those American soldiers had no trouble following illegal orders to torture Iraqi's and Afghanis? Check out the excellent documentaries "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" and "Taxi to the Darkside". Soldiers are trained to obey orders, not to question if they are legal or illegal. Most wouldn't think twice upon shooting American citizens dead if ordered to do so.

@HRH

While I agree with you that the Iraqi's and Afghani's had been effectively dehumanized, making torturing them easier. I still think a lot of soldiers wouldn't have trouble firing upon Americans, especially any Americans that they considered traitors. I've heard this sentiment a lot by soldiers. Those that say the Iraq war was a mistake and should be ended, are aiding the enemy. So if I'm "aiding the enemy" by questioning the war, doesn't that also make me the enemy? If I'm the enemy, then I doubt they'd have trouble killing me.

@Scorpio

No offense Scorpio but you are displaying the attitude of "it can't happen here". These are american soldiers, not Hitler SS you write. They are different you claim. Have you ever heard of the Stanford Prison Experiment? http://www.prisonexp.org/ Or Stanley Milgram's obedience studies? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment In Stanley Milgram's obedience study, he was able to get "good americans" to administer lethal shocks to people, just because someone in authority ordered them to. We only have to look at Abu Ghraib, Bagram airbase and Gitmo to see how "good American soldiers", will commit the most barbaric acts because of orders. The fallacy you are committing is that you think Americans are unique. That we are somehow different then all other humans. That is not the case.
