  • Could this article be any more offensive

[Read the article: Rise of the new black leaders]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There were so many ridiculous and offensive assertions in this article, like this below.

"Cronyism and political favors, he says, are the hallmarks of any machine that rises out of an impoverished community."

As if the poor have some monopoly on cronyism and political favors. Last thing I remember, the Bush White House didn't seem that impoverished and they wrote the book on corruption.

"As they build middle-class lives, African-Americans are adopting middle-class values: an intolerance of corruption and an expectation of accountability from their political leaders."

Does the author think that poor African-Americans just LOVE corruption? It's a matter of choosing the devil you know over the one you don't. Also, just because someone is poor, does not mean they can't have positive, "middle-class" values.

  • We Can Work With People We Disagree With

[Read the article: Obama: Don't pander to homophobes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm a black man and if James Watson, the racist Nobel Prize winner wanted to throw a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton or John Edwards, and the they made it 100% publicly clear that they do not support his beliefs and their legislative track record was the complete opposite of Watson's beliefs, I wouldn't have a problem if they took his money and endorsement. I would only have a problem with it if I felt the candidate in question were sympathetic to Watson's beliefs. In that case, I would want a staffer fired and the fundraiser canceled. But in this case, there are no grounds for believing that Obama is anti-gay, so trying to force him to refuse McClurkin's endorsement is shortsighted. Obama's got a big tent and everyone under it doesn't have to agree on every issue.

If I were an Obama handler, I probably wouldn't put Obama on stage embracing McClurkin. But McClurkin might have his own problems with that sort of public display of affection.

  • A Little Stevie Influence also

For the Japanese disco folk music, you forgot to mention that the melody is Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" from his Innervisions CD. Talk about globalization!!

Here's Steve's version if you care to compare:
