  • It's obvious

[Read the article: Ferraro wants study on sexism, racism in campaign]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's pretty obvious what answers Ferraro expects, and hopes, the study she's asking for will come up with to her questions. And there seems to be some reason to wonder about the objectivity of the group that's being asked to do the study.

Moreover, it's rather ironic that she accuses the Obama campaign and others of failing to understand women's anger while she herself shows so little understanding of the reaction that her own comments produced.

I believe that if the study were done by the group mentioned, especially if it were paid for by Ms. Ferraro and her associates as she suggests, there would be some legitimate reason to at least harbor some reservations about its conclusions.

I would certainly not dismiss such a study by an organization generally recognized as being independent.

  • Remarkable!

[Read the article: Scott McClellan: The beatings continue]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Joan, it is really pretty remarkable how you can take anything...absolutely anything...and somehow fnd a way to turn it into something to blame Obama for. Here, what started as a commentary on McClellan's book and the reaction to it (a subject actually deserving of a FULL column) quickly morphs into a complaint that it was Obama who is responsible for the firestorm over Hillary's comment about RFK's assassination. Sorry, Joan, it just doesn't fly. Others have pointed out that the story was propagating in the blogsphere almost immediately and that Drudge had an important part in that They have also pointed out, quite rightfully, that Hillary has had absolutely no compunction about fanning the flames of any controversy Obama found himself caught up in, which you pass off as just politics. Her remark was bound to stir up a hornet's nest by its very nature. It simply was NOT the completely innocuous historical reference that you and her other apologists try to make it. You claim to understand the sensitivity many people feel regarding mention of an assassination in this context, and yet your entire response to the issue simply belies that. What kind of mindset conjures up an assassination in justification of continuing a mathematically hopeless campaign despite the harm it threatens to do do the party and the country? And don't forget that this woman has made a number of other highly questionable comments (i.e. "He's not a Musim...AS FAR AS I KNOW", "hard working WHITE Americans"), all of which you have dismissed lightly.

Joan, is there ANYTHING Hillary could say or do that you would actually criticize her for? And would it even be POSSIBLE for you to write an entire column without going negative on Obama in some way?? And when you get so many negative responses making the same arguments, does it ever occur to you that they just might have a point?

  • Could be interesting

[Read the article: McCain wants joint town halls, Obama receptive to idea]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Depending on how the final details are worked out this could turn out to be an interesting idea. The thing that particularly interests me is the idea of local moderators with a limited role. No more big network moderators who are interested only in evoking "gotcha" moments and spend half their time asking about flag pins and Rev. Wright!

  • Why?

[Read the article: Rezko rains on Obama's parade]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"There has been no suggestion of illegality on Obama's part." Correct. So will you please explain why you're bothering to give this story such a prominent mention?

  • Appalling!

[Read the article: How Karl Rove played politics while people drowned]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Utterly appalling. Disgusting. Reprehensible. There simply are no words strong enough to describe the actions of Rove, Bush and pretty much the entire administratio as described in this article. One detail I found particularly telling is the way President Bush LOST the list Gov. Blanco gave him of the things that were needed. Just shows how much he cared!

  • Fear of damage

[Read the article: Did Clinton wait too long to concede?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I do believe that whatever presseure has been put on Hillary to bring her campaign to an end has mostly to do with fear of what damage the continuation of the battle might do do the Democratic Party's chances of regaining the White House in November. And indeed the historical examples cited of fights extending even to the convention are not encouraging. The critical need to elect a Democratic president so we can at least begin to undo the incalculable damage of the last 7 1/2 years must override all other consideratins and we must come together in an all out effort to achieve that end.

  • Good for Hillary!

[Read the article: Clinton suspends campaign, endorses Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This is the way it should be done. Now let's all heed the calls for unity and make sure we have a Democratic victory in November and a new start for this country come January.

  • A sorry thing

[Read the article: The return of Willie Horton]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's a sorry thing that a candidate should have to defend a vote against expanding the death penalty. There is a fundamental flaw with the very existence of the death penalty. While the penalty has ultimate consequences, in that the person punished is dead, at the same time it CANNOT BE CORRECTED if it is discovered that a error has been made. And make no mistake, errors are not just likely, they are a virtual certainty. We've all seen numerous stories of people who have been in prison for many years who have ultimately been proved innocent by new DNA or other evidence. The last figure I have seen shows about 3300 people in death rows around the country. If just 1/3 of 1% of those convictions were in error, we're talking about something like eleven people in line to be unjustly executed. I have never seen a proponent of the death penalty really deal honestly with this issue. They tend to get a little huffy when it's mentioned and revert back to spouting anger over the terrible crimes the death penalty is meant to punish. Well, the crimes ARE terrible, but that does not justify executing the innocent in order to get to the guilty.
