[Read the article: Rep. Kucinich introduces articles of impeachment]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The chances of Bush declaring a national emergency and canceling the election is about the same as a UFO landing ET walking out waving a magic wand and curing cancer.

Oh really? He's replaced every competent general at the Pentagon with political stooges. He has filled the Justice Department with, "Federalists," who believe the President has the power of a king. He has directed United States attorneys essentially to prosecute being a Democrat. He has directed his cabinet members to ignore congressional subpoenas, and congress didn't do a damn thing about any of it. You may be willing to put it past him, but I'm sure not.

The chances are so slim they are laughable. Even if he somehow did this, almost everyone would laugh. He'd be removed from office so fast it wouldn't be funny.

Perhaps. Or perhaps impeachment would continue to be off the table. I wouldn't hold my breath expecting congressional Democrats to show some sac.

Impeachment is reserved for protecting the country, not as punishment for past deeds. If Bush decided to attack Iran without Congressional approval, then impeachment would be warranted.

Nonsense. Impeachment is reserved for protecting the constitution, and our system of governance. Nothing less is at stake when the chief executive of our nation has zero regard for the law.

King George IV has stolen, or allowed to be stolen, over 500 million dollars, and that's just what we know about. That may not put us in grave danger, but to say it's unimpeachable is just ludicrous.

I never suggested he be punished. I suggested he be removed from office, or at the very least impeached. By allowing his crimes to go unnoticed, we implicitly endorse them, and we roll out the red carpet for the next fascist brownshirt. That is only one way he has endangered the country.

But currently, despite your protestations to the contrary, the US isn't in any great danger because of our current incompetent leadership.

Well, you anticipated that I'd have protestations to the contrary. So here they are.

First of all, he outed a covert CIA agent. The details of the damage that single action caused are classified. So you can't know for sure that we haven't been greatly endangered, just by that one article of the thirty five. I encourage you to read them, it was a pretty good refresher for me. I don't agree that all of them are impeachable, only about 28 or so. You'll have to do some googling, though, because, like Koppelman, most of our vapid, complacent media has declined to print even one single article.

Secondly, if you can truly say that the Iraq war has not endangered us, you're just not paying attention. I could write a very long essay about that, so I'll spare you, and just say you should maybe get your some of your information from non-American sources.

When we talk about Bush suspending elections and ruling as some strongman dictator, it feeds into the rights claim that the left is completely out of touch, and diminishes our ability to advance causes we believe in.

I didn't say it would definitely happen. I said it was possible, given the completely brazen lawlessness this wannabe tyrant has engaged in up until this point, with complete impunity. Impunity that you are now encouraging.

If the House voted to impeach, their popularity would skyrocket. They are currently even less popular than the president! They aren't unpopular because they've been standing up to Bush, but precisely because they haven't. That was the job we elected them to do in 2006, and they've failed miserably.

It's so completely ironic that the Republicans, by engaging in a politically motivated, baseless impeachment charge, and getting the white house and both houses of congress in return, have so scared unpatriotic cowards such as Koppelman and you, that you are against impeachment for very real crimes. Your reasons? Politically motivated.

What happened to, "Give me liberty, or give me death!"?

You're sounding an awful lot like bamage and, for the record, both of you are scaring the hell out of me with this line of (cogent and completely plausible) reasoning.

I wish I could say that I didn't find it plausible myself, and that I was playing the devil's advocate against Koppelman's Coulter-like rant against a big news story.

Instead, I'll say that passports are still obtainable today, June 10th, 2008, and that all you need to emigrate to Canada is a marketable skill, and $5000. There's no border fence up there, and they have universal health care, even for non-citizens.

I said in 1999 that I'd move to Canada if Bush won the election. Well, I weaseled out of that one by pointing out that Bush didn't win the election. In my paranoia over election theft, I chose my words carefully. I wish I hadn't been so prescient.

I say this now with no hint of humor or irony. If John McCain wins the presidency, or GWB unveils his October surprise, this Atlas will shrug. I'm beyond serious this time.

Anyone else notice that Alex has been blogging a LOT today? It couldn't be to bury the ass-kicking he got for calling Kucinich a laughingstock, could it?

Sorry for the cynicism. I calls 'em likes I sees 'em.

I, for one, will accept an abject apology. Someday I may even subscribe to Salon again. It's not like the $35 is gonna break me. I have a feeling it will be the about a week after Joan Walsh is replaced as editor. Have to get a lay of the land, ya know?

Pssssst! The word Hispanic is out. Latino is in. This is only a test. Had this been a real emergency, the PC police would now be knocking at your door.
