  • No worries, Conason

I think you're a lot more likely to attract the passionate than the dispassionate, and those who disagree, rather than those who agree.

You're still may favorite journalist here (though Glenn is a close second). I still think it was a misstep to not even mention Edwards the day after he came in second in the Iowa caucus, but I'm more than willing to overlook it in light of your body of work.

I certainly never saw any of your articles as an endorsement of Obama or Clinton. I'm quite familiar with your work. I was, however, disappointed that you seemed to be following the media script wrt Edwards, the invisible man (who also happens to be the only candidate eschewing corporate money).

  • What a coincidence

That Hillary's revelation about democracy and so forth comes to pass after the NH primary and the IA caucus!

Why? Because NH and IA believe that they are entitled to pick first, and that they're more educated than everyone else, and more responsible with their choices, more democratic in their methods, etc., etc., and they love the system as-is. If she had made this speech two months ago, before the IA caucas and NH primary, make no mistake she would have paid for it dearly with little podunk IA and NH voters, and now the "narrative" would be a lot different.

That Obama and Edwards withdrew their name in Michigan doesn't sit well with me (even tho I'm an Edwards supporter). Who do they think that plays to? DNC loyalists? Who the hell is a DNC loyalist these days? (well, besides IA and NH residents, I mean)

We need to have a national primary, and stop this undemocratic nonsense. End of story.

  • Oh, please

Another reason I'll be voting for McCain is Hillary Clinton gets the nomination. Hey Hillary, instead of trying to cheat your way into the nomination, how's about coming out completely and unambiguously against torture in all it's forms (including waterboarding. You know, the way McCain did.

Really? Because I thought his vote to confirm Roberts and Scalia and Muckasey were sort of... well... ambiguous. None of those people would even say that torture was wrong, even when repeatedly asked.

Talk is cheap. And McCain is the cheapest talker around. He's a paper tiger. He'd sell his grandmother to the Hutu militia to become president. He has no ideals that have ever shown in his votes. Don't try to sell me the abortion of a campaign finance bill that he vomited on the public at large, either.

I think you're wrong on the facts, in the case of Florida.

Perhaps you weren't following things a few months ago, but Michigan and Florida had the opportunity to hold their contests in such a way that their votes would count. They chose not to.

Actually, from what I understand, the Republican controlled legislature forced the January primary down the dem caucus' throats. They did it because the Repubs still award half the delegates to the winner, whereas the Dems are outta luck.

  • Wow

Author8675309 or whatever the hell your name is, I suggest you take your medication as it was prescribed to you.

Sheesh, you'd think after our 20 million dollar Starr report, where he dug into every possible thing he could try to pin on the Clintons, including Whitewater, Vince Foster, and the rest of your nonsense, people would realize that there's nothing there.

Newsflash... the "state" already brought its heavy artillery, and the best they could come up with was a cum stain. Good night and good luck.

  • Conference committee

[Read the article: More disruptions to the Cheney/Rockefeller plan]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The reconciliation of two versions of a bill is not done by a majority of the houses of congress. It's done by a reconciliation committee.

Now, I'm not sure who's on that committee, but it could very well be that the only version of the bill that the house has the opportunity to vote on resembles the Senate bill in full or in part. It's all about who is on the committee, and I can just about guarantee you it ain't Ted Kennedy and John Conyers.

Still a long slog of a battle ahead. Don't lose heart now, everyone! Keep up that pressure!

  • What's so horrible about vouchers?

[Read the article: What's Bush's Pell Grant proposal really about?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm sure that any Republican voucher plan is guaranteed to be a reverse Robin Hood debacle. I get that. What I don't get is why vouchers, per-se are such a cause-celebre for we liberals.

Public school is terrible. I think the main reason it is terrible is obvious -- no market pressures. Each school is its own little local monopoly, and has absolutely no reason to do anything other than fill desks. That's not education, it's daycare.

If instead, I could have the government spend exactly the same amount of money it would in public school at the school of my choice (including public shools), schools would all have to improve or they'd be out of business. Students would also have incentive to improve, because there would be so much more choice, and competition for slots in the good schools.

All our schemes to make all schools equal, through government regulation, are completely ludicrous, and are demonstrable failures. We can, however, offer every child an equal opportunity to compete, which is what the free market is all about.

Oh, if only Cthulhu would come and smite this lame strip!

Why would I do that, when it serves my purpose so well? The one you call Schlesinger is my Shoggoth. I, the timeless one, have already enjoyed the essences of those who have been/will have been/are being driven mad by this strip. Before long, if you continue to read it (and you will), you too will begin to feel the cold chill of the ocean air, though you may be in the middle of the desert, and it will draw you inexorably to me. To me, the deep one, down, down to the crushing depths, where I wait. Oh yes, I wait.
