Primal Gay
[Read the article: The Democrats' "gay debate" dance]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I find it interesting delving into the reasons a lot of (mostly)conservatives have problems with not just gay marriage - but gay people in general. One opinion that often comes up is that 'it's just not natural', in that survival of the species kinda way. Say what you will about inter-racial couplings between men and women, but their offspring keep up the numbers and so keep the species alive, right. Gay people cannot, gay men at least - and until recently lesbians neither - produce offspring. So the argument goes that if everyone was gay today then the species would be gone in a coupla generations. "Not a bad idea!" the overburdened, overheated earth perhaps replies.
Anyway, the question about offspring and survalism nicely dovetails into the debate about gay adoption. Do gay parents raise gay kids? Which boomerangs back to the first point about survivalism. Too soon to tell since it's all so new, but this point about the demographic implications of gays raising gays leads to point number three:
Since the West is generally much more tolerant, and even nuturing of gay lifestyles - are white people slowly killing their own race? "And is this a bad thing?" the choking, starving, dusted masses of the 'Developing World' ponder.

GIANT PANDA MATING DANCE!
[Read the article: How strong is the Democratic presidential field?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sometimes watching Barack and Hillary go at each other is like watching Giant Pandas trying to mate. The wariness with which they circle each other. The refusal to make eye contact.
A lot of us already feel that if those two can get along and get on the ticket, the Dems would have one foot in the door.
A smart, disciplined first woman president backed up by a inspiring, thoughtful first black vice-prez getting on-the- job training for 2016.
Contrast that with two old white guys in suits matching the color of their thinning manes. Well, maybe not thinning if Mitt Romney has a say in things.
And even if Clinton/Obama lose - I mean, damn! It would be a ride not soon forgotten, and one sure to ignite a long-term movement in this country.
As others have said in differing ways, Hillary brings the gravitas and Barack brings the love.
All this talk of a 'dream ticket' of course hinges on many factors. But if they can keep their egos in check and not rip each other to shreds in the primaries, they could form a team the whole world could root for. And that would be helpful in reversing the mess created by the guys currently in charge.
A final thought on Barack. He's got people thinking Kennedys. And that's never a bad thing. When the country's got Kennedys, the 60's, Camelot on their minds it usually swings Dem. When we're pining for Reagan, the GOP's got the Oval Office within their cross-hairs.

ALL THE GOOD SHIT'S ON CABLE
[Read the article: Art movies: R.I.P.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Oh, Camille! Gotta love her - really knows how to get a rise outta the guys. The irony. I know. I know.
My own take on her politics? Self-hating liberal, is it not obvious? But the whole liberal self-flagellation thing - sooo
3 years ago, Camille. And as Hillary says it's 'Progressive'. Move on, babe.
Anyway, so. Point one: I personally thought Anne Edwards kicked Ann Coulter's ass. "high-testosterone counterpunching?"
Anne was flailing like a madwoman, Camille.
Point two: "saggy Hillary cleavage." Uh-uh, not in this house, babe. Hillary's been looking good, especially in that debate with the pink top that Edwards dissed and Barack claimed to like. Hillary looked radiant that night! And the cleavage's been holding up pretty well for a Senator her age;-)
Point three: "No one will ever resolve the eternal hatreds and ethnic rivalries of the Middle East, which have been churning and festering for 5,000 years." Actually people have had the strength and courage to bring peace to the Middle East at various points in it's tumultuous history. It just doesn't too long.
Only a decade and some ago Yitzak Rabin almost got them there again. But he got shot in a tragedy the full effects of which we are still paying for.
Point four: "Republicans will still comfortably retake the White House next year if my fellow Democrats don't get their act together on the cardinal issue of geopolitics." Isn't that exactly what Barack and Hillary have been trying to sort out in their past coupla tangles?
Point five: With you on the death of arthouse. ALL THE GOOD SHIT'S ON CABLE...

Obama Vs Clinton
[Read the article: Barack Obama's Republican edge]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]At the risk of sounding disengenuous, this is the primary season, so it's perfectly normal for voters to be sizing up their options - "checking under the hood, kicking the tyres" - as Barack put it on the Daily Show ealier in the week. However, just as disengenuous is a developing trend amongst some caught up in the Obama hype to almost completely paint Hillary as, well, bad. Bad for the party and bad for the country. The logic goes that if Clinton were to win the nomination, she'd drag the party down - not only in the Prez race but also serev as a lightning rod to re-invigorate the GOP in Congresional and Senate races. I think this is a bit of a stretch. Yes, she is a polarizing figure, but then so is Bush. On this issue I think Dems need to take a look in the mirror and ask what stuff they're really made of. 'Cos it certainly wasn't that Conservatives took a look at Bush and said "Okay, liberals are never gonna vote for this guy, so he can't win."
There seems to be a depressing Anyone But Hillary sliver of Dems amonst Barack supporters and all I'll say is keep your eyes on the prize, people. Does anyone on the left REALLY belive that Hillary would be worse for this country and the world than one of those Grey Men on the other side?
A footnote on negatives: All three of our previous Presidents went into the general election capaign with negatives between 44 and 49 percent. Exactly where Hillary is today.
