And he never looked at her before during or after the brief statement nor did he acknowledge her as they walked out.
But even aside from that, there's no way in hell I'd be used as a political prop if my husband was just caught in a prostitution scandal. In fact, I told him so last night (although I think he already knew) - I will not play the demur long-suffering wife while you throw away your career, everything we've both sacrificed for, our family life (those girls haven't even been able to go to school this week) and my future. Luckily,my hubby is not an elected official nor fond of prostitutes! Phew.
The Republicans in the NY State legislature didn't even give Spitzer the decency of 24 hours of privacy to consider his situation before they went off and announced they'd impeach him if he didn't resign
Spitzer and his crew found out about all this Friday night. They had the whole weekend to react. As did Silda. She should absolutely do whatever she needs to do. I hope she kicks him out, keeps the 5th Ave apartment and goes back to her job.
Never mind what Silda knew or didn't know. I'd throw my husband out on his ass for doing that to my children.
This is a touching letter. The LW seems very level-headed and I bet she'll come through this well. Reading this letter I couldn't help think of some people I know locally who are very involved in a project with a sister community in Nicaragua. All year this group raises money locally and then 3-4 times a year there are week long trips down to this village. Not everyone goes every time. But one woman I know who goes always talks about her "family in Nicaragua", because that's what these people have become to her.
I hope the LW can look at her situation and see the silver lining - that she and her husband have the freedom to travel and become involved in more than the usual way in a charity or cause of their choice. Maybe it would be the Peace Corps, or an Afghani orphan group, whatever. But those of the kind of things those of us with kids don't have much freedom to do. I'm not saying Nicaraguan children she visits twice a year are the same has having your own baby, but she and her husband might be able to find a different fulfillment in another way.
And don't forget, LW, now you can devote yourself to being the best damn aunt anyone ever had!
Where have previous Top Chef winners gone? They've gone into their kitchens, where they should be. You don't see them as much as Project Runway contestants because their job is behind the scenes, whereas a fashion designer's job is often to be right in front of the camera making headlines. Chef's who can't stay in the kitchen because they crave the limelight (cough, Colicchio, cough) arent' the best chefs. Fashion and cooking are not comparable.
My problem with this ad is that it is directed at women (the purchasers of tampons) yet it uses a euphemism that women don't use very much. At least in my experience, "beaver" is a word men use, not so much women. And it seems to be used by men who are being fairly derogatory. I mean, no one says it in a complimentary way, do they? So, not so effective in reaching this woman, but it is a somewhat amusing twist on the word.
We all use euphemisms, but can I just say I HATE va-jay-jay? Can I start an anti-va-jay-jay movement?
"Nancy Pelosi is not "self-made". She had a very famous political father, and, as such, had his political connections when she started out."
"The vitriol heaped on Hillary has nothing to do with her being a woman. It has to do with her willingness to win at any costs."
The above two statements show just how sexism is so deeply rooted (even hear, at Broadsheet) that we don't even realize that we are engaging in it.
What male political candidate is criticized for having political connections? Very few. In fact, it's a rare political candidate who gets elected to any office higher than the local School Committee without political connections. However, when a woman has to use her political connections in a less traditional way, she's slammed for it. Very few men or women can coast on their political connections (W being the obvious exception but he had money thrown in as well) for very long. Hillary and Nacy Pelosi aren't still in Congress because only because of their fathers or husbands.
Think about this: how could a woman get elected to the presidency in 2007? She needs much better connections than a man in her position. As a woman, I am not excited that the potential first woman president got their on her husband's coat tails, but I'm willing to accept it as necessary to get better gender parity in public office. Until recently, a majority of the woman who served in Congress were there when they took their husband's seats (often after his death). Not the ideal way to get women ahead, but if it paved the way for Barbara Boxers and Nancy Pelosi's of the world, I'll take it.
What male political candidate is not driven and willing to win at almost any cost? Not all of them, but probably the majority. But when a woman does it, she's conniving, overly ambitious, a shrew. She's not ambitious or driven, she's too aggressive. Show me someone that believes that the same standards of behavior apply for both men and women and I'll show you someone with their head deeply buried in the sand.
I wasn't a Hilary supporter before, but I just may have talked myself into it!
