Joan, I'm normally with you, but that's nuts. We've had a roll call vote since the 1880's. Only one time have we not had one, and that was in 1964, in the wake of the Kennedy assassination. Plus, the rules say that we shall have a roll call vote.
In truth, the Obama campaign exercised pure Chicago-style politics. They tried to work on pure muscle, i.e. we have the votes and we can do what we want and put you in your place besides. But the Clintons had some chips too, such as 1900 delegates who could potentially raise royal hell right on national TV.
Courage? They just didn't want to remind the country of how close the nomination battle really was. I kept wondering: What are they afraid of? They won.
and arrogant toward Hillary's supporters, McCain's ploy wouldn't stand a chance.
By the way, may I suggest that liberal and progressive bloggers also stop with their sexist cracks about Sarah Palin?
And I was also surprised that Jimmy and Roslyn Carter were only allowed to make an appearance, walk around a little bit, and then move off-stage.
They had time to put on various yo-yos, but couldn't find time for a president of the United States?
Frankly, I thought it was embarrasing for Carter, and they should not have put him in that position.
Now THAT was really funny.
Oh, so it's Bill Clinton's fault. Did Bill Clinton have control over the convention? Is that why the whole thing was orchestrated, in every conceivable way, to pay fealty to Obama? Not a chance.
Turns out: Obama was getting blow-back from people who don't like Carter's position on palestinians. The Obama campaign axed Carter, in other words.
The Obama campaign has done nothing--repeat: NOTHING--to bring in Hillary voters. They didn't vet Hillary for VP. They haven't done squat to help pay off her debt. They fought her on every little damn thing at the convention. They had to be drug kicking and screaming to even say a nice word about her. They flat left women voters on the table, and told them to "get over it, you've got nowhere else to go, and Roe, Roe, Roe yer boat into the polling booth and vote the way you're supposed to."
Guess what? McCain may be old, but he's not stupid. If you're going to leave women voters on the table, I'm going to go for them.
Hey, we're on the same side. I want Obama to win. But frankly, assuming Palin can handle the national stage, Biden doesn't look that good next to her. Besides, he's been in Washington for 30 years.
@godot: Who gives a tinker's damn about party platforms?
@karenn again: It shows that he hasn't done anything to reach out! Jeez, do something, for cryin' out loud. All it's been is, "You lost, get over it, you've got nowhere else to go--oh, and Roe, Roe, Roe."
A little story: In 1968, Arthur Schlesinger said to RFK that, if they don't get the nomination, they should push for an anti-war plank in the platform. RFK said, "Arthur, when was the last time millions of people marched behind a platform?"
We're sunk. Show a little respect. She has as much experience as our guy does, and her family life seems pretty solid (not that that's in any way relevant to anything).
Attack the woman's family. Jeez, are progressives the most politically clueless people on earth or what?
I'd put BILL on the court, not Hillary. Let HIM deal with Scalia and Thomas. Their heads would be spinning.
I think she's pretty cool myself. Kay Hutchinson and Liddy Dole? You've got to be kidding. At least Palin seems to have some life in her. While she holds some positions I don't, she doesn't seem to be a fanatic about it.
In any case, it's not McCain's fault that the media and blogger boyz are flipping out. In fact, they're playing right into McCain's hands. McCain pulled a smart one, and we're looking like dummies.
I couldn't be more disappointed in the remarks here and elsewhere. What, pray tell, does Bristol's pregnancy have to do with anything, and why is it even news?
No, Hillary voters are not going to go with McCain because of Palin. What Palin does is firm up McCain's base, and, quite frankly, interject some "freshness" into this campaign.
She may bomb out. We'll see. But it was not a stupid pick by any means.
Teenage girl gets pregnant. Lordy, stop the presses!
Please, if anything this is likely to get votes, not lose them. Millions of families have been in just this situation.
Obamacans, please heed the advice of your leader. Leave peoples' families alone.
She understands that.
You thought the campaign was nasty so far? Get ready for attacks on Obama from the McCain 527s. They are low and sleazy, and they will work like a charm.
Sen. Obama, coming from Chicago, turns out to be excellent at campaigning against Democrats, but has no experience running against a Republican. Neither does Axelrod. It shows.
Moreover, the fact is that Obama peaked in February with his run of red-state caucus wins, none of which he will win in the general.
I was a Clinton delegate to the DNC and I am voting for Obama, but there is no question in my mind that Hillary would be beating McCain right now, and would have won the election. Why? Because she would have run as a Democrat, on Democratic policies, against the Republicans and their policies.
You've got to be more than "cool" and "hip" to win a national election. Anybody who fell for that "transformational" nonsense ought to retire from politics right now before they do any more damage.
if a black person appears in the ad? If that's the criterion, then much advertising in general is racist.
Please, you're over-cheerleading, and it's affected your judgment.
This stuff has been going on for at least 100 years, by both parties.
