My sister used to be like this...
[Read the article: How did the T get in LGBT?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...When we were children. She would stamp and refuse to proceed unless she got her way, and everyone did what SHE wanted to do. Amazingly, and to everyone's detriment, the adults allowed this.
We only need to observe the far right wing to see how things really get done in this country. Little by little, starting with school boards and local hot button issues, they've succeeded in turning this country so far right that Barry Goldwater, in retrospect, looks moderate. That Clinton, whose views on most issues are 1970's Republican, looks moderate. That we have state-supported religious groups, our children read right wing textbooks from first grade on, and we're one case away from losing reproductive rights for women. Our president allows his personal idea of god to govern our country, rather than our Constitution, and the rest of us have permitted this.
Yet, in 1964, anyone suggesting a Christian theocracy would have been laughed out of town. But that's exactly what we have now. Inch by inch, subversive things get done. Of course, for the rich and already powerful: stroke of the pen. The rest of us: inch by inch.
We don't have to like it, we don't have to believe it is not wrong and corrupt. But it works. And personally, I'd rather have civil rights than no rights, even if it's one stinking right at a time.

Crap is not too strong a word, Cary!
[Read the article: Will my family drag us down?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My advice to LW is this:
Notice your gut response to Cary's advice. If it is "Oh no! Oh f**k me!" then for godsake pay attention to that and save yourself.
If your response is "Yep, that's what I really want to do," then calmly kiss your marriage, your self-respect, and your peace of mind goodbye now, while you still know what they look like.
Cary is telling you that your relationship with your wife and child, as well as your own personal dreams and ambitions, should come second to assuming a caregiver role with your relatives for as long as it takes, knowing it will get worse. Much, much worse. Cary doesn't even mention your wife, who, in his world, is irrelevant. You might ask her how irrelevant SHE thinks she is...

What a load of revisionist crap!
[Read the article: Battle of the Bushes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Just how many sins does Senior have to commit before he is held accountable for them?
In his very first public role, he ran against the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
During his vice presidency, he said he was "out of the loop" in Iran Contra, and then pardoned Weinberger & 5 other convicted felons to avoid being subpoenaed. And please remember Iran/Contra, the huge executive end run around legislative power, and forerunner of the Imperial Presidency.
Invaded Panama in 1989, over 3,000 Panamanians dead. Not incidentally, helped to manipulate the press focus on Noriega as an "evil" leader during the war build-up. Sound familiar?
Ignored the growing problems of a shit economy, homelessness, and racist, sexist, & homophobic violence.
Gave us 1,000 points of light as a sop for the poverty, school crises, and social welfare failures he & his predecessor were responsible for.
Gave us Cheney as Secretary of Defense, and helped build Halliburton into the shadow government it is today.
Then there's the unnecessary Gulf War, and the 30,000+ Iraqi deaths, and the parade of military tanks through the streets of the Capital, and his abandonment of veterans with Gulf War Syndrome.
His back door deals that have made NAFTA the environmental and human rights disaster it continues to be.
His imperial Medici wife & their lying psychopathic children, Neil, Jeb, and George II.
His complete and utter failure to speak out as a loyal American against George II. You can imagine how vocal he'd be if the Potus were a Democrat. George II has murdered thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, shit on our Constitution, and turned our economy into a candy store for his friends - I'll stop here although he hasn't and won't - and George I is as mute as death.
And now we're supposed to imagine George I is somehow a noble figure? Give me an effing break, why don't you?!?

Don't upset the applecart in search of the perfect apple
[Read the article: We moved, and now my husband is miserable]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If LW's hubby thinks that moving is the answer, then for heaven's sake let him move. Maybe he's right, and needs the opportunity to prove it. Maybe he's wrong, and will continue to flounder wherever he lives. In any case, there's nothing about this marriage that a little time apart will damage.

A major jeer to the letters editor
[Read the article: The "Kite Runner" controversy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Some editor gave a star to a bozo who, without a spoiler alert, transcended review etiquette and gave away a crucial point in the plot. To those of us who once thought that the stars indicated acclamation of a particular letter, what does that tell us?
And I mean no disrespect to clowns. Really.

Huckabee is a virus
[Read the article: Huckabee, Obama, Kerry, Dean: Are they Macs or PCs?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A pernicious, despicable, hate-filled, contagious and ultimately destructive virus. He is incurable, and will delete every civil right he is allowed to infect. Our misfortune is that he is not demonstrably different from most of the other Republican candidates.
Not that rebooting with Democrats has been much help...
