oh hell no

Been there, done that. My parents started divorcing when I was in college, their case went up to the state appeals court THREE TIMES, the divorce was still active ten years later, and now, even 15 years after the proceedings started, there are still loose ends. Get as far away from this as you can, for your own mental stability and peace of mind. I stayed the hell away from it, didn't want to talk about it with either of them, and completely cut off contact with my father ten years ago when he kept trying to draw me into the drama. My sister tried to be a fair and honest broker for the entire time, and finally this year, after 15 years of heartache, cut off contact with him. The worst case scenario with Cary's suggestion is that once your parents get wind of you trying to consult your own counsel, one or both draw you into the litigation and your own legal bills cripple you. Do you really want this?

AG church positions are terrifying

I grew up as a member of an AG church (one of the ones called a "Christian Center") and spent K-10th grade in the school associated with that church. They believe some pretty terrifying stuff (speaking in tongues, faith healing, end times, etc. etc.). Most people I know who were indoctrinated in that stuff the whole time they were growing up are either atheists (like me) or still fully believe everything they are taught; it's hard to have a nuanced viewpoint after an experience like that.

I still think that the scariest thing about her is that she seems to have abused her power in every office she's held - why in heavens name would you want to give a petty despot real power? But the final gloss on this is that she has used power to promote a radical religous right agenda, (e.g. firing librarians who opposed book-banning). Imagine the accountable-to-no one attitude seen in the Gonzales AG firing scandals with a John Ashcroft morality-police twist. (Ashcroft is an AG church member). NFW.

@ tj

I'm confused - am I mimicking the MSM or the left wing blogs? There is a difference, contrary to your "anti-contrarian" views.

If I were not a "critical thinker", I would still be happily going to that church, believing that the earth was 5000 years old and that end times were near, and relying entirely on faith instead of free will.

for Becky Blitch

Becky, the AG.org website has links to their position papers, including one on disabilities. It's immensely condescending and heavily reliant on faith healing, but more humane than the position you're concerned about. In essence: sometimes God gives you a disability so that he can show his power through healing it, and sometimes he wants to teach you a lesson by letting you live with it - either way, the church and its people are instructed to be nice and compassionate. (In contrast, look at their position paper on homosexuality - absolutely horrible.)
